How to use your vegetable oil

On the surface of our skin, our layer of dead cells or the stratum corneum is rich in lipids. They contain ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids ... Frequent washing with detergents removes this lipid film.

This is why it is advisable to use vegetable oils, 100% natural to hydrate the skin and eliminate impurities in order to reconstitute a lipid film and to keep the skin beautiful and healthy.

How to differentiate an essential oil from a vegetable oil

An EO has a high concentration of aromatic molecules. In rare cases, for a one-off or localized administration for example, an EO can be applied pure to the skin. However, most of the time, when the application extends, the administrations multiply or the skin becomes fragile, a prior dilution in a suitable support becomes essential. The support, most often an organic vegetable oil , makes it possible to reduce the aggressiveness of an EO , while in turn providing benefits that are specific to it. Organic vegetable oils (HV) also reveal all their virtues in food.

Choosing the right medium therefore remains essential. Some HV bio adapt particularly sensitive skin of babies, other perfectly complement the action of ET. The choice of support is made according to the profile of the user (age, skin condition, etc.), the pathology to be treated or the route of administration of the EO Indeed, some organic HV are specifically suitable for the oral route: this is the case with walnut oil or olive oil.

Organic HV is extracted from the fatty substances of certain oleaginous fruits (walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, etc.), stones (apricot), seeds (grapes) or even seeds (sesame). Like an HE , HV bio meets strict standards. In the same way as for an EO , the quality of an HV bio is checked by chromatography. Each virgin organic HV has an identity card containing all the information necessary for good traceability: country of agricultural production, storage, oil analysis reports, etc.

How to choose the right organic vegetable oil

- Choose it virgin and unrefined. This is because refined vegetable oil contains trans fatty acids, which can be harmful to the skin.

- Composition rich in fatty acids: Prefer vegetable oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and first cold pressing. Polyunsaturated fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6 are essential and must be provided to our body through food. Applied to the skin, they remain on the surface, at the level of the stratum corneum where they will soften and to provide a feeling of hydration.

- Choose a vegetable oil according to its comedogenicity index: Prefer vegetable oils with low comedogenicity, that is to say that they do not promote or little blackheads. The comedogenicity index is measured on a scale of 0 to 5.

  • Index 0: not COMEDOGENE
  • Clue 1: Small COMEDOGENE
  • Clue 2: Slightly COMEDOGENOUS
  • Clue 3: Moderately COMEDOGENOUS
  • Index 4: moderately to highly COMEDOGENIC
  • Clue 5: Very COMEDOGENIC

For oily and acne-prone skin, use indices of 0 and 1, see 2, but avoid 3, 4 and 5. Oils rich in omega-3s are recommended for dry and reactive skin. Omega-3s will soothe inflamed skin thanks to their anti-inflammatory properties ...

In a smoked glass bottle, tightly closed and protected from light, a vegetable oil can be kept for two years.

Organic HVs contain many elements. All of them bring their benefits to the plant and give it great resistance :

  • Vitamins (A, B, C, E ...) and polyphenols with antioxidant action
  • Trace elements (copper, zinc, manganeze, etc.)
  • Amino acids (lysine)
  • Phytosterols (campesterol, stigmasterols, etc.)
  • Polyunsaturated fatty acids, 3 of which are predominant: oleic acid (omega 9), linoleic acid (omega 6) and alpha-linoleic acid (omega 3)

The nature of fatty acids differs from one organic HV to another. Some have a high omega 6 content like sunflower oil, others have a particular high omega 3 content like rapeseed oil for example.

Most organic HVs are difficult to store; these are fragile products, sensitive to air, light and heat. In fact, the fatty acids contained in oils can oxidize under the influence of certain factors, and transform into molecules potentially toxic to the body. This oxidation phenomenon usually results in a change in color or a change in the smell of the oil. Most vegetable oils can be kept for several months at room temperature in a dark, cool place. However, some of them, which are much more sensitive to oxidation, should be kept in the refrigerator after opening. This is the case with borage oil, or cottonseed oil. Once the bottle is opened, adding vitamin E helps to delay the oxidation phenomenon.
