What is conditioner?

Conditioner is a hair care product applied after shampooing to improve the texture and appearance of hair by nourishing and moisturizing it. Its formula, rich in moisturizing and conditioning agents, helps close the cuticle scales opened by shampooing, making the hair softer, smoother, and easier to detangle. A conditioner suited to your hair type helps preserve its suppleness and shine while protecting it from external aggressors (pollution, heat styling tools). It is the second essential step in any hair care routine, right after shampooing, for manageable and healthy hair.

How do you choose the right one for your hair type?

The choice of conditioner depends on your hair’s specific needs:

  • Dry and damaged hair: formulas rich in plant oils and butters for deep hydration;
  • Colored hair: antioxidants and UV filters to protect the color;
  • Fine hair: lightweight products that don’t weigh hair down and add volume;
  • Sensitive scalps: sulfate-free formulas to soothe without irritating.

For fragile hair, a strengthening and detangling formula helps minimize breakage during styling.

How to apply it properly?

Apply the conditioner to clean, towel-dried hair (excess water dilutes the product). Work a small amount through the lengths and ends, avoiding the scalp to prevent greasiness or buildup. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle and distribute the product evenly. Leave it on for a few minutes as directed, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. For a more intensive treatment on dry hair, leave it on longer before rinsing. Rinsing with cool water at the end of the treatment helps close the cuticle and adds shine. This simple step, incorporated after every shampoo, makes a real difference in the manageability and appearance of your hair.

What are the long-term benefits?

Regular use of a suitable conditioner helps maintain the hair’s moisture balance and protect the hair shaft from future damage. This results in less brittle hair and fewer split ends. Conditioner makes styling easier by making the hair more manageable and reducing frizz, for a smooth, silky finish. By closing the cuticles, it improves shine and texture with repeated use. This effect is cosmetic and superficial: it provides long-lasting improvement in the hair’s appearance and comfort without altering its underlying structure. Combined with heat protection and occasional nourishing treatments, it is part of a comprehensive hair care routine that preserves the hair’s beauty over time.

Can it be used without shampoo (co-washing)?

Using conditioner without shampoo is a practice known as “co-washing” (conditioner-only washing). This method may be suitable for certain hair types, particularly very dry, curly, or coily hair, as it gently cleanses the scalp and hair while preserving their natural moisture. Co-washing limits the drying effect of frequent washing and adds softness and definition to curls. To do this effectively, choose a lightweight conditioner specifically formulated for co-washing and rinse thoroughly to prevent residue buildup, which can weigh down the hair and suffocate the scalp. This technique is not suitable for oily hair, which requires a more thorough cleanse. Alternating between co-washing and regular shampooing is often the best compromise.

What about colored hair?

For colored hair, conditioner plays a key role in prolonging the vibrancy of the color and minimizing fading. Formulas designed for color-treated hair are enriched with antioxidants, UV filters, and moisturizing agents that help protect the color from external aggressors and repeated washing. By sealing the cuticle scales, they help lock pigments inside the hair shaft, preserving the intensity of the color for longer. Since coloring tends to dry out and weaken the hair, conditioner also provides the moisture needed to maintain softness and shine. To maximize color retention, pair it with a sulfate-free shampoo, space out washes, and use lukewarm water rather than hot water when rinsing.

Conditioner or hair mask: what’s the difference?

Both conditioner and hair mask nourish and moisturize the hair, but they differ in their concentration and how long they’re left on.Conditioner is lighter, designed for frequent use with a short application time (a few minutes), making it ideal for daily care and detangling. A hair mask is richer and more concentrated in active ingredients, designed for weekly or biweekly application with a longer application time, providing deep treatment for damaged or very dry hair. The two are complementary: conditioner for regular maintenance, and the mask for occasional intensive nourishment. There’s no need to use them together during the same wash; it’s better to alternate them as needed. For fine hair, spacing out mask treatments helps prevent the hair from feeling weighed down.

Can it cause dandruff?

Normally, conditioner does not cause dandruff, which most often results from an imbalance in the scalp or a reaction to certain substances. However, improper application—such as applying it too close to the scalp or not rinsing it out thoroughly—can lead to product buildup, which may irritate the scalp and cause discomfort. That’s why it’s essential to apply conditioner only to the mid-lengths and ends of the hair and to rinse thoroughly. Switching to a different conditioner can be helpful if your hair or scalp changes (due to seasons, coloring, or a new routine), to better meet their needs. If a product works perfectly for you, there’s no need to switch. If you experience persistent dandruff or itching, consult a healthcare professional.
