Hemorrhoids have always been a common condition that can affect anyone, but especially adults—particularly pregnant women and the elderly. Hemorrhoidal flare-ups manifest as itching, unbearable pain, and sometimes even bleeding, the severity of which varies from case to case. There are many treatment options, ranging from topical creams to surgical procedures, depending on the severity of the flare-ups. But there is another solution: homeopathy. It is both natural and effective.
Under normal conditions, hemorrhoids are painless venous formations located around and inside the anus and rectum. Problems arise when a hemorrhoidal flare-up occurs, caused by abnormal dilation of these veins. These veins may then protrude outward to form a “lump” near the anus.
The symptoms are occasional and easily recognizable: itching near the anus, discomfort when sitting, and bleeding during bowel movements.

Hemorrhoids are varicose veins in the anal and rectal mucosa. There are two types: internal hemorrhoids, which are visible via anoscopy, and external hemorrhoids, which protrude from the anal opening. The first involves dietary guidelines: one should consume plenty of fiber-rich foods (vegetables and fruits) and avoid foods such as spices, alcohol, and coffee.
In short, hemorrhoids are a dilation of the vessels in the hemorrhoidal plexus within the anal canal. Symptoms include irritation and bleeding. Thrombosed hemorrhoids are usually painful.
The hemorrhoidal cushion consists of an arteriovenous vascular network supplied by the superior and middle hemorrhoidal arteries, which in turn receive blood from the superior rectal artery. Drainage occurs via the hemorrhoidal veins, which pass through the sphincter apparatus. Hemorrhoidal cushions are therefore lined with mucosa and are located within a thick submucosal layer composed of connective tissue and smooth muscle cells above the pectinate line (corpus cavernosum of the rectum).
They are held in place by connective tissue fibers that pull them toward the internal anal sphincter muscle. Hemorrhoids are present when the vascular cushion is more developed than normal. The typical locations of hemorrhoids are indicated at the 3, 7, and 11 o’clock positions in the lithotomy position, although there is significant variability among individuals. They differ from the rectal mucosa in that they have a more purplish color.
The postulated cause of hemorrhoid enlargement is venous congestion, leading to subsequent hyperplasia of the rectal corpus cavernosum and prolapse of the tissue into the anal canal. Increased resting tone of the sphincter, as well as prolapse of the hemorrhoidal plexus, may be responsible for impaired venous outflow. It is possible that functional loss of the suspensory ligament—which surrounds and lies above the arteriovenous vascular complex and is composed of muscle fibers and elastic fibers of connective tissue—combined with a consequent descent of the mucosa, may be an independent causal factor.
Furthermore, new morphological and hemodynamic assessments of the anorectal vascular plexus have shown that the vascular convolutions possess an intrinsic contraction mechanism composed of smooth muscle cells, which regulates thethe inflow and outflow of blood volume as well as its flow velocity within the vessels. The destruction of this regulatory system—with the replacement of muscle cells by connective tissue fibers—then leads to the formation of hemorrhoids. The composition of collagen also appears to play a role; studies have demonstrated an increase in matrix metalloproteinases within this collagen.
It is, in fact, easy to imagine that mechanical irritation (for example, due to diarrhea, hard stools, or manipulation) or an increase in intra-abdominal pressure (as in the case of pregnancy, visceral adiposity, ascites, etc.) could influence these pathophysiological mechanisms; however, these factors have not been proven to be the cause.
The physiological role of the vascular cushion is, in particular, to ensure fecal continence in conjunction with the sphincter apparatus. The juxtaposition of the mucosal folds makes the anal canal impermeable to liquid feces and air. This accounts for 15 to 20% of continence.
It is important to distinguish between “internal” hemorrhoids and hemorrhoids formerly referred to as external (now called perianal veins), which are formed by a subcutaneous perianal vascular plexus covered by skin.
For internal hemorrhoids, the doctor may therefore use photocoagulation of the hemorrhoidal areas or liquid nitrogen. Internal hemorrhoids typically present with bleeding that occurs after a bowel movement; blood may be seen on toilet paper and sometimes in the toilet bowl. Internal hemorrhoids can be uncomfortable but are not as painful as thrombosed external hemorrhoids. They sometimes cause mucus discharge and a sensation of incomplete bowel movement.
