Native to Madagascar, this evergreen and highly aromatic tree can grow up to 5 m tall. In Malagasy, Mandravasarotra means “that which keeps evil at bay.” It is the most widely used plant among the populations in the western part of the island. In the Sakalava region, it is called either Motrobeatiagnana or Motrobeatianina, meaning “great fire in the gut,” because its entire above-ground portion has a pungent, burning flavor. But depending on the various Malagasy dialects, it is also called Fanalamangidy, meaning “that which removes bitterness,” or Mangidymanitra, meaning “that which smells of bitterness,” or Sakarivohazo, meaning “ginger wood,” or Sakaihazo, meaning “chili wood.”
