Native to Madagascar, this tree still green and very aromatic can reach 5 m high. Malagasy, Mandravasarotra means "holding the remote evil." It is the plant most used by people in the west of the island. In this region of Sakalava, it is called either Motrobeatiagnana is Motrobeatianina, that is to say "big fire in the guts" because its entire aerial part has a pungent, burning taste. But it is also called, according to the different Malagasy dialects Fanalamangidy "who takes away the bitterness" or Mangidymanitra "who feels the bitterness" or Sakarivohazo "wood ginger" or Sakaihazo "Wood Pepper".
