What is unruly hair?

Unruly hair is hair that is difficult to style, often characterized by a lack of softness and a tendency toward frizz and static electricity. Several factors contribute to this behavior: genetics (naturally wavy or porous texture), hormonal imbalances, weather conditions (humidity, wind), and harsh treatments (hair coloring, straightening). The common thread among most unruly hair types is a rough or lifted cuticle, which traps ambient moisture and swells, causing frizz and flyaways. The key to taming it, therefore, lies largely inhydrating and smoothing this cuticle. Rather than fighting its nature, it’s better to adopt a hair care routine that gently nourishes and tames the hair, for soft, manageable hair.

How can you prevent frizz?

Hydration is the best weapon against frizz, because a well-hydrated hair strand absorbs less of the moisture that causes it to swell:

  • Use moisturizing shampoos and nutrient-rich conditioners;
  • Apply nourishing masks and treatments regularly;
  • Limit heat styling (hair dryers, straighteners) and opt for air-drying instead;
  • Avoid rubbing your hair with a towel, as this causes the hair shaft to swell.

These tips also apply to curly and wavy hair, which is naturally more prone to frizz due to its texture.

What products should you use to care for it?

To tame unruly hair, choose products with nourishing and smoothing properties. Shea butter,argan oil, and cocoa butter coat the hair shaft, soften it, and smooth the cuticle. Hair serums and oils, applied sparingly to the lengths and ends, control frizz and add shine without weighing the hair down. Conversely, avoid products containing sulfates and drying alcohols, which dehydrate the hair shaft and make frizz worse. A professional hair analysis can help you identify the right products based on your exact hair texture. Regular moisturizing masks or oil treatments are particularly beneficial: applied once or twice a week and left on, they deeply restore moisture and suppleness, gradually transforming unruly hair into a more manageable style that’s easier to style every day.

Why is the pH of hair care products important?

The pH of hair care products plays a key role in taming hair. Hair has a naturally slightly acidic pH, around 4.5 to 5.5, which keeps the cuticle closed and smooth. Using products that respect this pH helps close the cuticles, making hair smoother, shinier, and less prone to frizz. Conversely, products that are too alkaline (such as certain soaps and harsh shampoos) open the cuticle, making the hair coarse and unruly. This is why an acidic rinse (diluted apple cider vinegar) can help “tame” unruly hair by closing the cuticle. Checking the pH or choosing products formulated to maintain it is therefore a good habit to develop. Understanding this concept helps explain many hair behaviors and allows you to choose truly suitable hair care products, rather than using products that exacerbate unruly hair by disrupting the hair fiber’s natural balance.

How should you style and protect it on a daily basis?

A tailored daily routine keeps unruly hair under control. Wash with a gentle shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner, spacing out washes to avoid drying out the hair. Apply leave-in treatments to maintain hydration throughout the day. At night, a silk cap or pillowcase helps retain moisture and minimizes frizz when you wake up. When styling, always apply a heat protectant before using a heated tool, and opt for structured hairstyles like loose buns or braids, which tame unruly strands without excessive tension. Also protect your hair from external aggressors (sun, wind, pollution) with products containing UV filters and antioxidants, a hat when exposed to the sun, and a rinse with fresh water after swimming. These simple steps, combined with proper hydration, make a real difference in how manageable your hair is.

Which styling tools should you choose?

The choice of tools directly influences how manageable your hair is. Opt for devices that distribute heat evenly and reduce friction: hair dryers with ionic or ceramic technology dry hair quickly while minimizing heat damage and frizz. When it comes to brushes, natural bristles (boar bristles ) smooth the cuticle and distribute sebum along the hair shaft, which tames the hair and adds shine without causing breakage. A wide-toothed comb is ideal for gently detangling, especially on damp hair. Avoid low-quality tools with rough surfaces, which can snag and damage the hair. Regardless of the heating tool, set the temperature to the lowest effective setting and always protect the hair shaft. The right tools, used in moderation, help tame unruly hair without weakening it, whereas unsuitable tools or excessive heat only make the problem worse in the long run.

Can unruly hair be permanently straightened?

Permanent straightening (Brazilian straightening, Japanese straightening) is sometimes considered to permanently reduce volume and frizz. These techniques alter the hair’s texture for several months, but they are harsh chemical treatments that require careful consideration. Important warning: Some so-called “Brazilian” straightening treatments may release formaldehyde, a substance classified as a carcinogen (IARC Group 1) and strictly regulated in cosmetics (0.2% limit in the European Union). It is essential to check the product’s ingredients and opt for formaldehyde-free treatments. These straightening treatments must be performed by professionals, following a preliminary consultation to assess the condition of the hair and scalp. For those who wish to avoid chemical treatments, gentler alternatives exist: at-home smoothing treatments, careful blow-drying, or simply a deeply moisturizing routine that naturally tames the hair shaft. The choice depends on individual expectations, but caution is still advised when it comes to these harsh treatments.
