Respiratory allergies primarily manifest as allergic rhinitis, with symptoms such as a stuffy nose, itching, a runny nose, frequent sneezing, and loss of smell.
There are two types of rhinitis:
“Persistent” allergic rhinitis: lastingmore than four days and occurring for more than four weeks per year. Allergic rhinitis is caused by allergens found in our environment
“Intermittent” allergic rhinitis: lasting less than four days per week or four weeks per year. Seasonal allergic rhinitis is primarily linked to pollen that appears in the spring.
The consequences of allergies include sleep disturbances, mood disorders, concentration problems, and disruptions to professional, family, or social life.
Respiratory allergiescan also manifest as asthma, with episodes of shortness of breath and wheezing. These allergies are primarily caused by respiratory exposure to “allergens” such as pollen, house dust mites, mold, and animals.
Symptoms ofallergic asthmainclude difficulty breathing, shortness of breath after physical exertion or laughing, wheezing, a feeling of suffocation (tightness in the chest), and a dry, irritating cough.
Allergic conjunctivitisis also a form of respiratory allergy. It can be triggered by pollen, certain products such as eye drops, dust, etc. It is not contagious. This allergic reaction is often associated with others (rhinitis or asthma). The allergens involved include dust mites, animal dander or feathers, colorful flowers or bulbous plants, and certain cosmetics.
