Respiratory allergies are mainly manifested by allergic rhinitis, with stuffy nose, itching, runny nose, frequent sneezing, loss of smell.
Two types of rhinitis exist:
So-called “persistent” allergic rhinitis : beyond four days and four weeks per year. Allergic rhinitis is caused by allergens that are found in our environment
so-called “intermittentallergic rhinitis : less than four days a week or four weeks a year. Seasonal allergic rhinitis is mainly linked to pollens that arrive in the spring.
The consequences of allergies are sleep disturbances, mood disorders, concentration problems and disturbances in professional, family or social life.
Respiratory allergies can also manifest themselves through asthma, with a choking attack, wheezing. These allergies are mainly due to respiratory contact with "allergens" such as pollens, house mites, molds, animals.
Symptoms of allergic asthma are difficulty breathing, shortness of breath after exertion or laughter, wheezing, feeling of suffocation (tightness in the chest), dry, irritating cough.
Allergic conjunctivitis is also a form of respiratory allergy. It can be caused by pollens, certain products such as eye drops, dust, etc. It is not contagious. ADVICE / HEALTH EDUCATION

a) What is an allergy, what is an allergic reaction?

Allergy is an overreaction of our body to substances it considers harmful, allergens. Allergens are the factors and substances triggering allergy and associated disorders.

During repeated and intensive contacts of our body with the allergen, an allergic reaction is triggered.

The allergic reaction refers to all symptoms appearing a few minutes or hours after exposure to allergens. These allergens come from plants, animal hair, food, dust mites, molds or are substances of occupational origin.

This allergic reaction causes the release in the body of substances such as the histamine responsible for the disorders felt.

As with any allergic disease, it is important to consult a doctor at least once.

IT SHALL DETERMINE IN PARTICULAR THE NEED TO CARRY OUT AN ALLERGOLOGICAL BALANCE SHEET.

b) How to recognize allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis results in the following symptoms: successive sneezing, colorless nasal discharge, nasal obstruction (stuffy nose), itching and tingling of the nose. It may be accompanied by irritations of both eyes (tearing, redness), throat and nose.

We distinguish:

· Seasonal allergic rhinitis or hay fever: frequent, they occur every year in the same season, when pollen concentration increases in the air, and usually occur for the first time during adolescence. However, you may not be allergic to all pollens, but to one or more of them only.

· Perennial allergic rhinitis occurs throughout the year and most often depends on domestic allergens such as dust mites, molds, and domestic animals.

c) Some practical tips

Removing the allergen (foreclosure) is the measure of choice to suppress or reduce the symptoms of allergy.

For household allergens: measures to reduce the presence of allergens are essential:

· The mattress should be completely surrounded by a plastic dust mite cover as well as the pillows. The bed base, unless it is in slats or metal, shall be surrounded by a plastic. All bedding should be washed twice a month at 60 ° C if possible,

· The room must be ventilated and cleaned regularly,

· On the floor, one will avoid the descent of bed and the carpets,

· Avoid pets,

During the pollen season it is possible to reduce the exposure to pollen:

· In your garden, diversify the plantations avoiding the most allergenic species (cypress, thuja, birch ...).

· Avoid mowing the lawn yourself during the pollen season.

· Garde preferably with glasses and a protective mask.

GLOSSARY (summary)

allergy
Skin reaction (itching, pimples, swelling) or general discomfort occurring after contact with a particular substance, use of a medication, or ingestion of food. The main forms of allergy are eczema, urticaria, asthma, angioedema and allergic shock (anaphylactic shock). Food allergy can also result in digestive disorders.

antihistamine
Medication that opposes different effects of histamine. Two main types exist: antihistamines type H1 (antiallergic) and antihistamines type H2 (gastric antiulcer). Some antihistamines of type H1 are sedative, others do not alter vigilance.

atropine
Medication with effects similar to those of atropine. Atropinics fight spasms and diarrhea. Adverse effects of atropinic drugs include: thickening of bronchial secretions, dry mouth and mucous membranes, constipation, risk of urine blockage and acute glaucoma crisis in susceptible persons, accommodation disorders, abnormal sensitivity to light by dilation of the pupil. Taking several atropine medicines increases the risk of adverse effects. In the event of overdose or accidental ingestion, the following signs may also appear: red and warm skin, fever, acceleration of breathing, fall or, on the contrary, elevated blood pressure, agitation, hallucinations, poor coordination of movements. Emergency care should be given to your doctor or, if not available, call 15, 112 or an emergency medical service.
In addition to atropine and its derivatives, other drugs have atropine effects: imipraminic antidepressants, some antihistamines, antispasmodics, antiparkinsonian and neuroleptic.

Hepatic insufficiency
Inability of the liver to perform its function, which is essentially the elimination of some waste, but also the synthesis of many biological substances essential to the body: albumin, cholesterol and coagulation factors (vitamin K, etc.).

palpitations
Abnormal perception of irregular heartbeat.

allergic reaction
Reaction due to hypersensitivity of the organism to a drug. Allergic reactions can take a wide variety of aspects: urticaria, angioedema, eczema, eruption of pimples resembling measles, etc. Anaphylactic shock is a generalized allergic reaction that causes discomfort due to a sudden drop in blood pressure.

rhinitis
Inflammation or infection of the nose and nasal cavities. Rhinitis can have an infectious origin (bacteria or virus) or an allergic origin. Allergic rhinitis includes seasonal rhinitis (hay fever) and perennial rhinitis, which are often persistent during the year (eg due to mites, animal hair or chemical agents) .

sedatives
  • Quiets, calms down.
  • Medication belonging to different families: anxiolytics, hypnotics, analgesics, cough suppressants, antiepileptics, neuroleptics, etc. but also antidepressants, antihistamines H1, antihypertensives. A sedative can be responsible for drowsiness and increase the effects of alcohol.

symptoms
Trouble felt by a person with an illness. The same symptom can translate different diseases and the same disease does not necessarily give the same symptoms in all the patients.

symptomatic treatment
Treatment that suppresses or alleviates the symptoms of a disease without addressing its cause.

dizziness
Symptom that can mean an impression of loss of balance (common sense) or, more strictly, a sense of rotation on oneself or the environment (medical sense).
