EFFERALGAN granules in sachets are indicated for the symptomatic treatment of mild to moderate pain and/or fever. EFFERALGAN is a paracetamol-based medication. Like aspirin, EFFERALGAN relieves mild to moderate pain but does not have aspirin’s anticoagulant effects and is not an anti-inflammatory. On the other hand, EFFERALGAN—and acetaminophen in general—is very well tolerated by children and by pregnant or breastfeeding women. Be sure to follow the usual dosages and dosage forms (tablets, capsules, suppositories, syrup, etc.) for each age group, and verify that any other medications being taken do not contain acetaminophen; if they do, factor this into the maximum daily dose allowed. The maximum daily dose of acetaminophen for ADULTS over 15 years of age is 3 grams spread over a 24-hour period.

How should Efferalgan be taken?

The maximum daily dose of acetaminophen is 60 milligrams (mg) per kilogram (kg) per day, to be divided into 4 or 6 doses, i.e., 15 mg per kg every 6 hours or 10 mg per kg every 4 hours.

For adults and adolescents weighing more than 50 kg, the usual daily dose of acetaminophen is 3,000 mg per day, or 6 packets. However, in cases of more severe pain, the maximum dose may be increased to 4,000 mg per day, or <"bold">8 packets per day.

Use in Children and Adolescents

EFFERALGAN 500 mg, granules in sachets IS INTENDED ONLY FOR ADULTS, ADOLESCENTS, AND CHILDREN weighing more than 27 kg (approximately 8 years of age and older).

For children, it is essential to follow the dosages based on the child’s weight and therefore to choose an appropriate dosage form. The approximate ages based on weight are provided for guidance only.

For children, the total daily dose of acetaminophen must not exceed 60 mg per kg.

Frequency of Administration

Regular dosing helps prevent fluctuations in pain or fever:

• In children, doses should be spaced evenly, including at night, preferably 6 hours apart, and at least 4 hours apart.
• For adults and adolescents, doses should be spaced at least 4 hours apart.

What are the side effects of Efferalgan?

• if you weigh less than 50 kg
• if you have mild or moderate hepatic insufficiency (liver disease)
• if you have chronic alcoholism or excessive alcohol consumption (3 or more alcoholic drinks per day)

• if you have Gilbert’s syndrome (familial nonhemolytic jaundice)
• if you are taking other medications that affect the liver at the same time as EFFERALGAN 500 mg, granules in sachets
• if you have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency
• if you have hemolytic anemia (abnormally low red blood cell count and hemoglobin level)
• if you have chronic malnutrition (low hepatic glutathione reserves)
• if you are dehydrated (excessive loss of body water)
• if you have acute viral hepatitis or if this condition is diagnosed while you are taking EFFERALGAN 500 mg, granules in sachets. Consult your doctor, as they may discontinue treatment with EFFERALGAN 500 mg, granules in sachets.
