Aspegic has been available on the French market since 1982. Manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis France, it is available as a powder for oral solution in single-dose packets (100 mg to 1,000 mg) and as a powder for injectable solution (500 mg/5 mL or 1 gram). The medication Aspegic contains aspirin, which has numerous analgesic, antipyretic, blood-thinning, and anti-inflammatory properties at high doses.

Aspegic is indicated for pain and/or fever, such as

• headaches,
• flu-like symptoms,
• toothaches,
• muscle aches, and for the treatment of certain rheumatic conditions in adults.

What are the benefits of aspirin?

Aspirin is an anti-inflammatory medication that helps reduce fever by blocking the production of prostaglandins (hormones) involved in the processes of fever, pain, and inflammation. Aspirin is an antipyretic medication because it lowers body temperature.

Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), better known by its trade nameaspirin, is the active ingredient in many medications with analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also used as an antiplatelet agent. It is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

Aspirin, or acetylsalicylic acid, belongs to the salicylate family. It is one of the most commonly prescribed medications (NSAIDs), and in addition to these prescriptions, there is significant use through self-medication. This compound acts as a peripheral analgesic, indicated for the management of mild to moderate painof various origins; as an antipyretic; anti-inflammatory at high doses (up to 6 grams per day, divided into 3 or 4 doses spaced at least 4 hours apart), an antiplatelet agent at low doses (less than 300 mg/day), and a uricosuric agent.
Aspirin works by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis through its action on cyclooxygenases (COX-1 and COX-2). Most of the adverse effects (particularly gastrointestinal and hemorrhagic), the precautions required for treatment, and the contraindications associated with taking aspirin stem directly from its mechanism of action in inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis.

How should aspirin be taken?

The usual dosage is 1 effervescent tablet containing 500 mg, to be repeated as needed after at least 4 hours. For more severe pain or fever, take 2 effervescent tablets of 500 mg, to be repeated as needed after at least 4 hours, without exceeding 6 effervescent tablets per day.

• For adults and children weighing more than 50 kg (approximately 15 years of age and older)

The maximum recommended daily dose is 3 g of aspirin, or 6 effervescent tablets per day.

The usual dose is 1 effervescent tablet containing 500 mg, to be repeated as needed after at least 4 hours. For more severe pain or fever, take 2 500-mg effervescent tablets, to be repeated as needed after at least 4 hours, without exceeding 6 effervescent tablets per day.

• For the elderly

The maximum recommended daily dose is 2 g of aspirin, or 4 effervescent tablets per day.

The usual dose is 1 effervescent tablet containing 500 mg, to be repeated as needed after at least 4 hours. For more severe pain or fever, take 2 effervescent tablets at 500 mg each, to be repeated as needed after at least 4 hours, without exceeding 4 effervescent tablets per day.

• For children weighing 30 to 50 kg (approximately 9 to 15 years old)

The aspirin dosage depends on the child’s weight; ages are provided for informational purposes only.

If you do not know the child’s weight, weigh the child to determine the most appropriate dose.

Aspirin is available in a variety of strengths, allowing the treatment to be tailored to each child’s weight.

The recommended daily dose of aspirin is approximately 60 mg/kg/day, divided into 4 or 6 doses, which is about 15 mg/kg every 6 hours or 10 mg/kg every 4 hours.

• For children weighing 30 to 40 kg (approximately 9 to 13 years old), the dosage is 1 effervescent tablet per dose, to be repeated as needed after 6 hours, without exceeding 4 effervescent tablets per day.
• For children weighing 41 to 50 kg (approximately 12 to 15 years old), the dosage is 1 effervescent tablet per dose, to be repeated as needed after 4 hours, not to exceed 6 effervescent tablets per day.

What are the side effects of aspirin?

If pain persists for more than 5 days, or a fever for more than 3 days, or if the medication is not effective or any other symptoms occur, do not continue treatment without consulting your doctor.

• Taking acetaminophen may cause liver dysfunction.
• You should consult your doctor before taking this medication:
• If you weigh less than 50 kg,
• If you have liver disease or severe kidney disease,
• If you drink alcohol frequently or have recently stopped drinking alcohol,
• If you are dehydrated,
• If you suffer from, for example, chronic malnutrition, if you are fasting, if you have lost a significant amount of weight recently, if you are over 75 years old, or if you are over 65 years old and have long-term medical conditions, if you have HIV or chronic viral hepatitis, if you have cystic fibrosis (a genetic, hereditary disease characterized in particular by severe respiratory infections), or if you have Gilbert’s syndrome (an inherited condition associated with elevated levels of bilirubin in the blood).
• If you are allergic to aspirin and/or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
• Consuming alcoholic beverages during treatment is not recommended.
• If you have recently undergone withdrawal from chronic alcoholism, the risk of liver damage is increased.
• When administering this medication to a child, the dose depends on the child’s weight (see the section “How should DOLIPRANE 1000 mg capsules be taken?”).
• If you develop acute viral hepatitis, stop taking this medication and consult your doctor.

Never take aspirin:

Always consult a doctor if you have a fever. Paracetamol is recommended as the first-line treatment for fever. Aspirin, while it has many benefits, can cause side effects.

• Never take aspirin if you are allergic to the active ingredient or to any of the other ingredients in this medication, as listed in Section 6.

• If you are pregnant, starting at the beginning of the 6th month of pregnancy (after 24 weeks of amenorrhea).
• If you have a history of gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation following previous treatment with a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
• If you have a history of asthma caused by aspirin or a related medication (particularly nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
• If you have an active stomach or duodenal ulcer or a history of such ulcers.
• If you have a bleeding disorder or are at risk of bleeding.
• If you have severe liver disease.
• If you have severe kidney disease.
• If you have severe heart disease.
• If you are currently being treated with methotrexate at doses greater than 20 mg per week and when aspirin is used in high doses as an anti-inflammatory (≥ 1 g per dose and/or ≥ 3 g per day) particularly in the treatment of rheumatic conditions, or in the treatment of fever or pain (≥ 500 mg per dose and/or < 3 g per day) (see section “Other Medications and ASPIRIN UPSA 500 mg, Effervescent Tablet”).
• If you are taking oral anticoagulants, have a history of stomach or duodenal ulcers, or are taking aspirin in high doses, as an anti-inflammatory (≥ 1 g per dose and/or ≥ 3 g per day)—particularly in the treatment of rheumatic conditions—or for the treatment of fever or pain (≥ 500 mg per dose and/or < 3 g per day) (see the section “Other Medications and ASPIRIN UPSA 500 mg, Effervescent Tablet”).
