DAFALGAN is an over-the-counter medication containing acetaminophen manufactured by the pharmaceutical company UPSA. Just like aspirin, DAFALGAN relieves mild to moderate pain but without aspirin’s anticoagulant effects, and it is not an anti-inflammatory either. On the other hand, DAFALGAN—and acetaminophen in general—is very well tolerated by children and by pregnant or breastfeeding women. Be sure to follow the standard dosages and dosage forms (tablets, capsules, suppositories, syrup, etc.) for each age group, and verify that any other medications being taken do not contain acetaminophen; if they do, factor this into the maximum daily dose allowed. The maximum daily dose of acetaminophen for ADULTS over 15 years of age is 3 grams spread over a 24-hour period.

How should Dafalgan be taken?

Dosage

This product is intended for adults and children weighing 27 kg or more (approximately 8 years of age and older).

The paracetamol dosage depends on the child’s weight; ages are provided for informational purposes only.

If you do not know the child’s weight, weigh the child to ensure you give the most appropriate dose.

Duration of Treatment

Acetaminophen is available in a variety of strengths, allowing the treatment to be tailored to each child’s weight.

The recommended daily dose of acetaminophen depends on the child’s weight: it is approximately 60 mg/kg/day, to be divided into 4 or 6 doses, or about 15 mg/kg every 6 hours or 10 mg/kg every 4 hours.

For children, the total daily dose of acetaminophen must not exceed 80 mg/kg/day (see Section 4.9).

For adults and children weighing more than 50 kg (approximately 15 years of age and older), the usual dosage is 1 to 2 tablets per dose, depending on the severity of the pain, to be repeated as needed after at least 4 hours.

It is generally not necessary to exceed 3 g of acetaminophen per day, or 6 tablets per day. However, in cases of more severe pain, and on the advice of your doctor, the total dose may be increased to 4 g per day, or 8 tablets per day.

However:

· Doses exceeding 3 g of acetaminophen per day require medical advice.

· NEVER TAKE MORE THAN 4 GRAMS OF PARACETAMOL PER DAY (including all medications that contain paracetamol).

Always allow at least a 4-hour interval between doses.

The maximum daily dose must not exceed 60 mg/kg (not to exceed 3 g) per day in the following situations:

• adults weighing less than 50 kg,
• severe liver disease,
• Gilbert’s syndrome (nonhemolytic familial jaundice),
• chronic alcoholism,
• chronic malnutrition,
• dehydration.

If you feel that the effect of DAFALGAN 500 mg tablets is too strong or too weak, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

What are the side effects of Dafalgan?

• In rare cases, a skin rash or redness may occur, or an allergic reaction may develop, which can manifest as sudden swelling of the face and neck or sudden dizziness accompanied by a drop in blood pressure. You must stop treatment immediately, notify your doctor, and never take any medication containing acetaminophen again.
• In rare cases, severe skin reactions have been reported. You must stop treatment immediately, notify your doctor, and never again take any medication containing acetaminophen.
• In exceptional cases, laboratory abnormalities requiring blood tests have been observed: liver dysfunction, abnormally low levels of certain white blood cells or blood cells such as platelets, which may result in nosebleeds or bleeding gums. In such cases, consult a doctor.
• Cases of diarrhea, abdominal pain, elevated liver enzymes, and increased or decreased INR have been reported.

Never take Dafalgan:

• If you are allergic to the active ingredient or any of the other ingredients in this medication, as listed in Section 6.
• If you have severe liver disease
