What is Dafalgan 500 mg used for?

Dafalgan 500 mg is a paracetamol-based medication intended to relieve mild to moderate pain and reduce fever. This formulation is suitable for adults and children weighing at least 27 kg, or approximately 8 years of age. The dose for children is determined by their weight.

How does acetaminophen work, and how can you avoid mistakes?

Paracetamol is a pain reliever and fever reducer. Each tablet contains 500 mg. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time: a 1,000 mg dose is reserved for people weighing at least 50 kg when 500 mg is not sufficient.

Tips for proper use: Note the time of each dose and check for the presence of acetaminophen in all other medications you are taking, especially those for colds or pain.

What is the recommended dosage?

Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. The following maximum doses apply to all paracetamol doses taken within a 24-hour period:

• Children weighing 27 to 40 kg: 1 tablet per dose, spaced at least 6 hours apart; maximum 4 tablets per day (2 g).
• Children weighing 41 to 49 kg: 1 tablet per dose, spaced at least 4 hours apart; maximum 6 tablets per day (3 g).
• Adults and children weighing 50 kg or more: 1 to 2 tablets per dose, spaced at least 4 hours apart; maximum 6 tablets per day (3 g) without medical advice.

Seek medical advice if a fever lasts longer than 3 days, if pain lasts longer than 5 days, if symptoms worsen, or if other symptoms appear.

When should you seek advice or consult a doctor?

• Do not use if you are allergic to acetaminophen or any of the excipients, or if you have severe liver failure.
• Consult a healthcare provider before use if you have liver or kidney disease, chronic alcohol use, Gilbert’s syndrome, malnutrition, or dehydration, or if you are an adult weighing less than 50 kg: doses or dosing intervals may need to be adjusted.
• Avoid alcohol.

Inform your pharmacist of any current medications, particularly oral anticoagulants or flucloxacillin. During pregnancy, acetaminophen may be used if necessary, at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest possible time; seek advice. It may be used while breastfeeding at therapeutic doses.

In case of overdose, seek medical help immediately, even if there are no symptoms. Stop taking the medication and consult a healthcare provider if an allergic or skin reaction occurs. Read the package insert and keep the container out of the reach of children.
