The indications for Causticum reflect the diverse therapeutic properties of this homeopathic remedy created by Hahnemann in 1800. Since then, it has remained an essential part of homeopathic treatment for various forms of paralysis and rheumatic pain. It is therefore particularly recommended for treating neurological and rheumatological conditions. Causticum is also effective against warts, pustules, ear, nose, and throat (ENT) conditions, urinary dysfunction, and behavioral disorders.
Treating Neurological, Rheumatic, and Dermatological Conditions with Causticum
Thanks to its therapeutic properties, Causticum is an effective remedy for treating numerous conditions affecting the nervous system, the joints, and the ENT system.
Homeopathic medications—whether in granule tubes or globule doses—can be used for a variety of symptoms; therefore, it is not possible to specify the indications and dosage for a particular preparation.
Indications in Neurology
Causticum is used to treat conditions or dysfunctions affecting the nervous system, the brain, the spinal cord, and the nerves. These neurological disorders manifest as neuralgia, dizziness, headaches, epileptic seizures, and various forms of paralysis and paresis. The remedy’s therapeutic properties are therefore used to treat patients suffering from facial paralysis and vocal cord paralysis. It is also commonly used to treat any form of reduced muscle strength (paresis) affecting the tongue, bladder, or sphincter.
Indications in Rheumatology
Casticum provides relief for patients suffering from rheumatism and pain resulting from joint disorders. It is therefore prescribed when the patient experiences painful stiffness and cracking in the joints or knees. This remedy is also indicated for treating osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, arthralgia, or synovitis, an inflammation of the joint lining.
Indications in Dermatology
Certain dermatological conditions require the administration of Causticum for therapeutic purposes. This remedy has proven effective for skin eruptions such as acne, pustules, or eczema. This therapeutic efficacy makes it possible to successfully provide homeopathic care to patients suffering from warts, pruritus, burns, skin ulcers, or itching throughout the body.
The homeopathic physician selects the appropriate remedy, dilution, and dosage of Causticum 4CH, 5CH, 7CH, 9CH, 15CH, or 30CH Boiron Granules, based on the patient’s health condition and characteristic symptoms.
Indications and Recommended Dosages for ENT Disorders
Causticum helps alleviate symptoms resulting fromaphonia, hoarseness, laryngitis, or earache. Thus, loss of voice, sensations of irritation or tickling in the throat, and pain in the inner or outer ear can be eliminated through administration of the remedy.
The same applies to chronic sneezing and ringing in the ears.
When laryngitis is accompanied by loss of voice, take 5 granules of Causticum 4 CH three times a day. Patients experiencing pain in the throat and larynx due to a dry cough should take 5 granules of Causticum 9 CH three to six times a day, depending on the severity of their symptoms. Finally, in cases of dysphonia, it is recommended to take 5 granules of Causticum 15 CH two to four times a day.
Causticum 5 CH: Use if the cough is dry and burning along the entire length of the trachea, accompanied by painful hoarseness and urinary leakage during prolonged coughing spells.
Indications and Recommended Dosages for Urinary Conditions
Causticum helps treat disorders and dysfunction of the urinary system. Indeed, the remedy is indicated for patients suffering from bladder pain, frequent urges to urinate, or involuntary urination when coughing or blowing their nose. These symptoms may stem in part from cystitis or bladder dysfunction resulting from paralysis; in such cases, the patient suffers fromurinary incontinence.
Following a bladder examination, patients with urinary incontinence are commonly prescribed 5 granules of Causticum 15 CH in the morning and evening. As part of rehabilitation for incontinence, the same dilution is prescribed at a dose of five granules two to four times a day.
Indications and Recommended Dosage for Behavioral Disorders
People prone to personality disorders may benefit from Causticum, as this remedy is strongly recommended for those suffering from depressive syndromes. Thus, anxiety, melancholy, despair, and sadness can be treated with Causticum. Women who are particularly sad and irritable before their periods may also benefit from this remedy. Finally, Causticum can be administered to individuals dominated by emotionality, fear, chronic apprehension, or a fear of the dark.
In cases of behavioral disorders characterized by an unconscious or conscious fear of certain situations—such as a fear of the dark or of going to bed—one dose of Causticum 30 CH should be taken per week.
Directions for Use
Remove the tab, turn the tube upside down, and gently pull the cap. Twist the tube to dispense the desired number of granules into the cap, then place the granules under the tongue. It is recommended not to touch the homeopathic granules or globules with your fingers. The globules from the single-dose tubes are taken all at once by allowing them to dissolve slowly under the tongue. If a dose is missed, take 10 granules of the same dilution.
Recommended Dosage for Neurological Conditions
For neurological conditions such as facial paralysis or vocal cord paresis, the recommended dosage is five granules of Causticum 15 CH, to be taken two to four times a day depending on the severity of the symptoms.
Recommended dosage for rheumatological conditions
For joint pain, the recommended dosage is 5 granules of Causticum 9 CH, to be taken once or twice a day. In the specific case of pain resulting from osteoarthritis, it is recommended to take three granules of Causticum 7 CH three times a day when the pain is accompanied by joint stiffness.
Recommended dosage for dermatological conditions
For warts, take 5 granules of Causticum 9 CH twice daily; for itching or eczema, take 5 granules of Causticum 15 CH three times daily.

Administering homeopathic granules to infants and children
For Causticum granules 4CH, 5CH, 7CH, 9CH, 15CH, and 30CH, dissolve them in 100 ml of water. Since the granules take a very long time to dissolve, you should prepare the mixture in advance.
Homeopathy and Pregnancy
Homeopathic remedies have no chemical toxicity, no contraindications, no interactions with other medications, and no adverse effects related to the amount ingested. Pregnant women can use them without any known risk to themselves or their unborn child, but it is best to seek advice.
Frequency of Homeopathic Use
For acute conditions, it is recommended to take the homeopathic remedies Causticum 4CH, 5CH, 7CH, 9CH, 15CH, and 30CH Boiron Granules every hour until symptoms improve. After that, doses should be spaced out to 3 or 4 times a day, then gradually discontinued.
For chronic conditions, remedies in low dilutions (greater than 9CH) are taken 1 to 2 times a day, while constitutional remedies are taken once a week or even once a month. This decision is up to the homeopath.
What to Do If There Is No Improvement Within 24 Hours
Certain conditions cannot be treated with Causticum 4CH, 5CH, 7CH, 9CH, 15CH, or 30CH Boiron granules through self-medication alone. Due to their severity, these conditions require medical advice, which can be provided by a homeopathic physician. This physician will determine whether your condition can be treated with homeopathy alone or whether your treatment should be supplemented with allopathic medicine.
