Advice from your expert pharmacist in the event of a fatty cough

The main cause of a fatty cough is the presence of mucus, a kind of porridge composed of bacteria, viruses and white blood cells, these secretions constitute a more or less thick liquid that can be expelled through the mouth during the cough in the form of mucus and spitting. It differs in this from a dry cough, characterized by the absence of secretions and often linked to irritation of the respiratory tract.

Understanding sputum

The airways are lined with a mucous membrane, called the epithelium, made up of cells with thousands of tiny vibratile cilia. During an assault, the mucous membrane secretes mucus, which is expelled by the movement of the eyelashes. This is when the cough and sputum come on. Sputum or sputum is a mass of secretion coming from the bronchi or the trachea and emitted during coughing.
Sputum contains 95% water and 5% protein. They may or may not be colored, tinged with blood or even smelly.

How does a fatty cough manifest itself?

The fatty cough, also called productive cough, manifests itself by the presence of sputum, or consecutive sputum, coming from the throat or lungs, unlike the dry cough, called "non-productive".

When to take a mucolytic?

These drugs can be prescribed when the sputum is difficult and sticky and exists in the form of powders, tablets or syrups - these are called expectorant syrups.

How to get mucus out quickly?
  • Drink a lot of water.
  • Use a humidifier or take a hot shower.
  • Rest with your head elevated.
  • Drink hot tea with lemon and honey.
  • Put a warm compress on your chest.
  • Avoid unhealthy foods

Health Education Council:

Bronchial congestion favors the occurrence of infections. It most often results in a fatty cough that does not cause pain but can reduce secretions (sputum or sputum).

The fatty cough is a defense against the congestion of the bronchi by the secretions.

Its role is to clean the bronchi by evacuating the secretions by sputum. This is why the fatty cough must be respected, and even facilitated by the taking of an expectorant.

In addition to the expectorant treatment, the evacuation of the bronchopulmonary secretions can be facilitated by simple gestures and the respect of a few rules:

· drink a lot, (water, herbal tea) to hydrate the secretions,

· humidify the air at a temperature between 17 ° C and 19 ° C,

· avoid tobacco which is an aggravating cause of cough.
