Advice from your pharmacist, an expert in productive coughs

The main cause of a productive cough is the presence of mucus, a thick, viscous substance composed of bacteria, viruses, and white blood cells. These secretions form a liquid of varying thickness that can be expelled through the mouth when coughing in the form of phlegm and sputum. This distinguishes it from a dry cough, which is characterized by the absence of secretions and is often linked to irritation of the respiratory tract.

Understanding Sputum

The respiratory tract is lined with a mucous membrane, called the epithelium, consisting of cells equipped with thousands of tiny cilia. When the respiratory tract is exposed to an irritant, the mucous membrane secretes mucus, which is expelled by the movement of the cilia. This is when coughing and expectoration occur. Sputum or expectoration consists of secretions from the bronchi or trachea that are expelled during a coughing fit.
Sputum is 95% water and 5% protein. It may or may not be colored, may be tinged with blood, or may have a foul odor.

What are the symptoms of a productive cough?

A productive cough, also known as a wet cough, is characterized by the presence of phlegm—or repeated coughing up of phlegm—from the throat or lungs, as opposed to a dry cough, which is known as a “non-productive” cough.

When should you take a mucolytic?

These medications may be prescribed when phlegm is thick and sticky; they come in the form of powders, tablets, or syrups—the latter are referred to as expectorant syrups.

How can you clear mucus quickly?
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Use a humidifier or take a hot shower.
  • Rest with your head elevated.
  • Drink hot tea with lemon and honey.
  • Place a warm compress on your chest.
  • Avoid unhealthy foods

Health Education Council:

Bronchial congestion favors the occurrence of infections. It most often results in a fatty cough that does not cause pain but can reduce secretions (sputum or sputum).

The fatty cough is a defense against the congestion of the bronchi by the secretions.

Its role is to clean the bronchi by evacuating the secretions by sputum. This is why the fatty cough must be respected, and even facilitated by the taking of an expectorant.

In addition to the expectorant treatment, the evacuation of the bronchopulmonary secretions can be facilitated by simple gestures and the respect of a few rules:

· drink a lot, (water, herbal tea) to hydrate the secretions,

· humidify the air at a temperature between 17 ° C and 19 ° C,

· avoid tobacco which is an aggravating cause of cough.
