It should be distinguished from antibiotic ointments (such as fucidin), which are more selective and attack microbes while respecting normal cells. An antiseptic is used preventively,in the hope of avoiding infection. Antibiotics are used curatively to eliminate an infection.
In practice, you should be aware that the application of an antiseptic is followed within ½ hour by a proliferation of the remaining microbes, and that an antibiotic is only really active for the first few days. After a week, any remaining microbes will have become resistant.
