The German European Commission has approved the medicinal use of horsetail for the treatment of edema caused by shock . It also recognizes its use as a urinary drain , in addition to the absorption of many liquids (irrigation therapy) and to treat infections and inflammation of the urinary tract and remove small kidney stones . The European Commission has also approved the use of horsetail externally to help heal wounds that heal poorly .
