Emotional state refers to one’s overall affective state—mood, emotional reactivity, hedonic tone, and resilience. It is regulated by four neurotransmitter systems:
Griffonia (Griffonia simplicifolia) is the natural plant source of 5-HTP—the direct precursor to serotonin, unlike tryptophan, which must first be converted to 5-HTP. 5-HTP crosses the blood-brain barrier directly without competing with other amino acids. Controlled studies show improvements in mood, anxiety, and sleep at doses of 100 to 300 mg/day. Important precaution: Contraindicated with SSRIs, MAOIs, and tramadol (risk of serotonin syndrome). Do not use for more than 3 months without consulting a doctor.
Saffron (Crocus sativus, 30 mg/day) inhibits the reuptake of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Meta-analyses (2019, 2021) confirm its efficacy for mild to moderate depression, comparable to fluoxetine over 6 to 8 weeks. It also improves emotional eating and sleep quality. Contraindicated during pregnancy at therapeutic doses; do not combine with SSRIs without medical advice.
Tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin, the conversion of which requires vitamin B6 (a cofactor for tryptophan hydroxylase). Vitamin B9 (methylfolate, 5-MTHF) is essential for the methylation of emotional neurotransmitters via SAM-e (S-adenosylmethionine). A deficiency reduces the synthesis of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Studies show that people with depression often have low folate levels, and that methylfolate supplementation improves the response to antidepressants.

Selenium is a cofactor for thioredoxin reductase, protecting serotonergic neurons from oxidative stress. Cohort studies link insufficient selenium intake to a more negative mood and increased anxiety. The gut-brain axis is the other key factor: 95% of serotonin is produced in the gut by enterochromaffin cells. A balanced microbiota (Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium longum) produces neurotransmitter precursors and directly modulates emotional state via the vagus nerve and the HPA axis.
