BOIRON’sOscillococcinum: a truly unique case in homeopathy.
During a severe global influenza epidemic in 1919, Dr. Joseph Roy, based in Dijon, observed in patients a condition he described as “oscillating,” along with an “oscillating” level of a microbe he consequently named oscillococcus. To him,the oscillococcus appeared to be a universal pathogen, but its existence has never been proven.
A few years later, this physician believed he observed the same microbe in various viral diseases (herpes, chickenpox, mumps, measles, shingles) as well as in the blood of patients with tuberculosis or cancer. He first attempted to treat these cancer patients with vaccine therapy, using an extract of his oscillococcinum. However, this therapy based on the oscillococcinum strain worsened the condition of some patients. Despite this setback, Roy continued his experiments with Oscillococcinum. In order touse his discovery for preventive and curative purposes, Roy chose a source for culturing the germ: the livers and hearts of Barbary ducks. Oscillococcinum is an animal extract diluted to an infinitesimal degree: approximately 1 part per 10,400.
The use ofOscillococcinum is not based on the law of similars or on individualized treatment, which are two of the foundations of homeopathy. Oscillococcinum is therefore an exception among homeopathic treatments, which explains why it is criticized by some homeopaths and homeopathy specialists.
