GLOSSARY

alcohol

A general term referring to a family of substances that can be mixed with water and fats. The most common alcohol is ethyl alcohol (ethanol), but there are many other alcohols: methanol, butanol, etc. The proof of an alcoholic solution corresponds to the volume of pure alcohol present in 100 ml of solution, bearing in mind that 1 wine glass or 1 half-pint of beer (25 cl) contains approximately 8 g of alcohol.

When alcohol is used as an antiseptic, a denaturant with an unpleasant odor is often added to prevent it from being drunk. Contrary to popular belief, 70% alcohol (or even 60% alcohol) is a better antiseptic than 90% alcohol.

See the article: Alcohol Dependence

cough suppressant

A medication that suppresses coughing. The most potent cough suppressants contain codeine or codeethyline.

allergic reaction

A reaction caused by the body’s hypersensitivity to a medication. Allergic reactions can take many different forms: hives, angioedema, eczema, a rash resembling measles, etc. Anaphylactic shock is a generalized allergic reaction that causes distress due to a sudden drop in blood pressure.

See the article: Can you be allergic to medications?

sucrose

Sucrose is the substance that makes up table sugar and industrial sugar found in cookies, cakes, candies, and sugary drinks (a 1.5-liter bottle of soda contains the equivalent of thirty sugar cubes). Some people are intolerant to fructose, which is produced during the digestion of sucrose, and therefore experience bloating and diarrhea. Some medications contain sucrose as an excipient (a component with no therapeutic activity).

See the article: Are all carbohydrates the same?

sugar

A general term referring to various substances, the most common of which is sucrose. Other sugars may be present in medications: glucose, fructose, lactose, etc. Glucose is the sugar used by the body; it is the only one found in significant quantities in the blood.

Sweeteners (artificial sweeteners) are permitted for diabetics or people on a diet and are very low in calories.

See the article: Are all carbohydrates the same?

symptom

A condition experienced by a person with an illness. The same symptom can indicate different illnesses, and the same illness does not necessarily produce the same symptoms in all patients.

Advice from our naturopaths

The use of homeopathy in the treatment of acute bronchitis The use of homeopathy in the treatment of acute bronchitis

Acute bronchitis is a localized or diffuse inflammation of the bronchi . The most common cause is infectious: viral or bacterial . There is no radiologically detectable anomaly. When these appear, it is because the inflammatory process reaches the pulmonary alveoli. Clinically, acute bronchitis is manifested by a more or less intense febrile syndrome, accompanied by cough. The evolution can be interspersed with complications in the…

The Scots pine, symbol of life, longevity and immortality The Scots pine, symbol of life, longevity and immortality

Scots pine, whose botanical name is Pinus sylvestris L., belongs to the Pinaceae family. Its essential oil is obtained from the needles. The origin of Scots Pine's Latin name is debated. Alexandre Etienne Guillaume "de" Théis, in 1810, maintained that it comes from the Celtic "pinus", meaning mountain or rock. However, Félix Gaffiot, in his 1934 French Latin Dictionary, thought…

Pleurisy or pleuritis is an inflammation of the pleura with or without effusion. Homeopathic treatment is only possible for infectious, non-purulent serofibrinous pleurisy and traumatic pleurisy. All other causes (tuberculosis, pulmonary embolism,…
