Like the skin and nasal mucosa, the conjunctiva, the thin membrane covering the eye, is in constant contact with allergens present in the atmosphere (dust mites, animal hair, feathers, pollen, etc.), on the eyelids (cosmetics) or in the eyes (eye drops). In people with an allergic background, these allergens can trigger an inflammatory reaction of the conjunctiva, similar to the reaction responsible for allergic rhinitis.
