Clove essential oil (Syzygium aromaticum, flower bud) is the most potent in aromatherapy—and the riskiest. Its eugenol content (70–90%) makes it the premier natural oral antiseptic, the go-to active ingredient for relieving toothaches for centuries, and a formidable winter remedy. But it’s also the most dermocaustic essential oil on the market—never use it undiluted on the skin, and always follow dilution guidelines precisely. Explore our oral care and aromatherapy line.

Clove and Toothache: How to Use It Without Burning Yourself?

The most well-known use—and the one that requires the most caution.

  • Eugenol is the go-to local anesthetic in dentistry—it’s still used in some professional products in the form of zinc eugenol
  • For occasional toothache relief: Apply 1 drop of clove essential oil to a cotton swab and gently dab it on the gum or around the tooth—never apply it undiluted in a thick layer directly to the mucous membrane (guaranteed to cause a burn)
  • Dilute to 10–20% in a neutral vegetable oil for sensitive skin or mucous membranes before application
  • Duration: temporary relief while waiting for a dental appointment—not a long-term treatment
  • See our line of natural oral care products and mouthwashes

Cloves and daily oral hygiene?

The wisest daily use—well below the analgesic dose.

  • Bad breath and oral hygiene: 1 drop of essential oil in 200 mL of lukewarm water for a mouthwash—swish for 30 seconds, do not swallow—eugenol at a low dose neutralizes the oral bacteria responsible for bad odors
  • Natural toothpastes with eugenol: products containing clove or eugenol are among the most effective against pathogenic oral flora—check the concentration (regulated at a maximum of 0.5% in cosmetics under EC Regulation 1223/2009)
  • Rinse for sensitive gums: 1 drop in 1 teaspoon of coconut oil; gently massage the gums; rinse — soothes irritated gums and supports local oral hygiene

Cloves for winter support?

Its eugenol is one of the most powerful active ingredients against winter pathogens—use with precision.

  • Diffusion: 2–3 drops maximum in a diffuser with other less irritating essential oils—never use alone for prolonged diffusion (mucosal irritation)
  • Winter blend: clove (2 drops) + ravintsara (5 drops) + noble laurel (3 drops)—a powerful immune-boosting trio, 15 minutes max
  • Application to the soles of the feet: 1–2% in vegetable oil—the thick skin on the feet tolerates eugenol better—supports natural defenses for 2–3 weeks max
  • Never apply to the face, chest, or areas of thin skin—burns are guaranteed even at 2–3%

Clove and digestive comfort?

Eugenol activates digestive enzymes and balances gut flora—a use validated by traditional herbal medicine.

  • Clove tea: 2–3 cloves in 250 mL of boiling water, steep for 10 minutes — aids digestion after heavy meals, bloating, and sluggish digestion
  • Essential oil in enteric-coated capsules (under supervision): strictly for internal use—never swallow the essential oil undiluted or mixed with water
  • Digestive blend: clove + ginger + cardamom — a classic spicy combination for difficult digestion
  • Avoid if you have ulcers, gastritis, or gastroesophageal reflux—eugenol irritates delicate digestive mucous membranes

Precautions — the most dermocaustic essential oil on the market?

  • Never apply undiluted to the skin: clove essential oil causes chemical burns within minutes—always dilute to a maximum of 1–2% for widespread topical use, and 10–20% for spot application on mucous membranes
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women: contraindicated
  • Children under 12: contraindicated without specialized supervision
  • Anticoagulants: serious documented interaction — do not use without medical advice
  • Epilepsy and seizure-prone individuals: seek medical advice—eugenol may lower the seizure threshold at high doses
  • Duration of use: 2–3 weeks maximum for winter use—such a potent essential oil should not be used continuously
