What are gastric disorders, and how can they be distinguished from one another?

Gastric disorders refer to all functional or organic disturbances of the stomach and the epigastric region. Distinguishing between functional disorders (no lesion) and organic disorders (identifiable lesion) is essential for choosing the right treatment. For a comprehensive diagnosis, see our page on stomachaches. Find our active ingredients in digestive enzymes and digestive comfort supplements.

  • Functional disorders: functional dyspepsia (no lesions, Rome IV criteria), stress-induced disorders, visceral hypersensitivity—respond well to lifestyle and dietary changes and natural active ingredients
  • Organic disorders: gastritis (H. pylori, NSAIDs, alcohol)—see our page on gastritis —gastroduodenal ulcer—gastroesophageal reflux—require specific medical treatment
  • Food intolerances: lactose, gluten (celiac disease), fructose — gastric symptoms triggered 30 minutes to 2 hours after consuming the offending food — stepwise elimination test
  • Irritating medications: NSAIDs (ibuprofen, ketoprofen, aspirin) — oral corticosteroids — bisphosphonates — direct irritation of the gastric mucosa → drug-induced gastritis
  • Warning signs (endoscopy required): blood in vomit (hematemesis), black stools (melena), dysphagia, weight loss > 5%, nocturnal symptoms — gastric cancer must be ruled out

Supplements and natural ingredients to support stomach health

Carefully selected natural support can significantly improve gastric comfort. Discover our selection in the digestive health medications and supplements line.

  • Activated vegetable charcoal: adsorbs gastric gases and toxins responsible for bloating—provides rapid relief—should be taken at least 2 hours apart from any medication—effective for functional disorders with predominant bloating
  • Ginger (Zingiber officinale): gastric prokinetic + antiemetic + anti-inflammatory for the mucosa — 500–1,000 mg before meals — relieves heaviness, nausea, and slow digestion—available in capsules, herbal tea, or standardized extract
  • Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla): antispasmodic + gastric anti-inflammatory — 3 cups of tea per day between meals — soothes epigastric burning and functional cramps
  • Digestive enzymes (lipase + amylase + protease): compensate for reduced production due to age, stress, or mild pancreatic insufficiency — reduce bloating and postprandial fermentation — take at the start of each main meal — see our line of digestive enzymes
  • Milk Thistle (silymarin): hepatoprotective + mild choleretic — supports gastric function in cases of associated liver overload — 150–300 mg of silymarin per day

Diet, Alcohol, Tobacco, and Gastric Health

  • Alcohol: directly irritates the gastric mucosa → hemorrhagic gastritis if consumed in excess — increases gastric acidity — worsens GERD by relaxing the gastroesophageal sphincter — should be avoided or strictly limited (< 1 drink/day)
  • Tobacco: reduces the production of prostaglandins that protect the mucosa — increases the risk of gastric ulcers and cancer — slows mucosal healing — quitting is beneficial within the first few weeks
  • Frequent, slow meals: 5–6 small meals — chew each bite 20–30 times — avoid large meals in the evening (slower gastric emptying at night) — do not lie down for 2–3 hours after eating
  • Hydration: 1.5–2 L/day of plain water between meals — avoid carbonated beverages (CO₂ = gastric distension) and more than 2 cups of coffee per day (acidity and GERD)
  • Physical exercise: 30 min/day: improves gastric motility + reduces stress + maintains weight (being overweight worsens GERD) — take a walk 15–20 min after a meal

Probiotics, stress management, and medical follow-up

  • Probiotics (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium): restore the gastrointestinal flora after antibiotic therapy or stress — reduce functional gastric symptoms — 4–6-week course — particularly useful after H. pylori eradication with triple therapy
  • Stress management: cortisol → increases gastric acidity + impairs motility → cardiac coherence 3 times a day + meditation + regular physical activity — see our page on digestive difficulties
  • Targeted dietary supplements: soluble fiber (psyllium, pectin) — prebiotics (inulin, FOS) — magnesium (gastric spasms) — vitamin D3 (mucosal immunity) — see digestive comfort supplements
  • Confirmed allergies and intolerances: strict elimination diet — lactase if lactose intolerance — gluten-free diet if confirmed celiac disease — systematically adjust diet and supplements
  • When to seek medical advice: symptoms persisting for > 4 weeks — sudden onset after age 50 — nighttime symptoms or rapid worsening — endoscopic evaluation to rule out a serious organic cause
