What is muscle soreness, and why does it occur?

Post-exercise muscle soreness —scientifically known as DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness)—is muscle pain that occurs 12 to 72 hours after unusual or intense physical exertion. It results from mechanical micro-injuries to muscle fibers and the surrounding connective tissue, which are particularly pronounced during eccentric contractions (the lowering phase of a squat, running downhill, or lowering a weight during strength training). The resulting local inflammatory response releases prostaglandins and bradykinins, which sensitize muscle nociceptors and account for the characteristic pain.

How long does muscle soreness last, and should you be concerned?

Muscle soreness generally peaks in intensity between 24 and 48 hours after exercise, then subsides spontaneously within 3 to 7 days. It is a sign of unusual mechanical stress but does not necessarily reflect the effectiveness of the workout. It is important to distinguish between mild muscle soreness:

  • A muscle injury (tear, strain): acute pain occurring during exercise, often localized to one side, which may be accompanied by a popping sound and immediate loss of function.
  • Rhabdomyolysis: extreme muscle soreness accompanied by dark urine (tea- or coffee-colored), generalized cramps, and intense fatigue—a medical emergency requiring immediate medical attention.

What natural remedies relieve muscle soreness?

Several natural active ingredients have strong evidence supporting their ability to reduce muscle soreness:

  • Turmeric (curcuminoids): inhibits the inflammatory signaling pathways involved in DOMS pain. Several clinical studies confirm a reduction in the intensity of muscle soreness and accelerated recovery of strength.

Does magnesium help with muscle soreness?

Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function and reduces fatigue—a recognized health claim. How can you prevent muscle soreness during your next workouts?

Preventing muscle soreness relies on a gradual approach and a nutritional strategy:

  • Progressive training: Increasing volume or intensity by no more than 5 to 10% per week allows muscle fibers to adapt gradually.
  • Proper warm-up: Preparing the muscles for exercise reduces the extent of micro-injuries, especially during the eccentric phase.
  • Pre- and post-workout nutrition: Consuming leucine-rich proteins during the post-workout window accelerates recovery; carbohydrates limit catabolism by maintaining insulin levels and replenishing glycogen.
  • Adequate sleep: The nighttime peak in growth hormone determines the rate at which damaged muscle fibers repair themselves.
