What is cold sores, and how do they develop?

Cold sores —commonly known as fever blisters—are an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). After an initial infection (often asymptomatic in childhood), the virus migrates to the trigeminal ganglia, where it remains dormant for life—no current treatment can permanently eliminate it. Recurrences occur when the immune system is weakened. Natural products for cold sores and immune support are available in the store.

  • Outbreak cycle (7 to 10 days): Day 1 (prodromal symptoms—tingling, itching, burning in the lip area—optimal time to start treatment)—Days 2–3 (vesicles clustered in bunches on an erythematous base) — Days 4–5 (vesicles rupture, oozing sore — most contagious stage) — Days 6–10 (scab, gradual healing)
  • Main triggers of reactivation: physical or emotional stress (cortisol suppresses the immune system) — fatigue and lack of sleep — sun exposure on the lips without SPF protection — fever and intercurrent infections — hormonal fluctuations (menstrual cycle, pregnancy) — immunosuppression (medications, diseases)
  • Contagiousness: highest when blisters rupture — but also present during the prodromal phase and during asymptomatic viral shedding (transmission possible without visible lesions) — transmission through direct contact (kissing, sharing utensils, towels) — avoid oral-oral and oral-genital contact during the active phase
  • Spread to other areas: touching a lesion and then rubbing your eyes can cause ocular herpes (herpetic keratitis—an ophthalmological emergency) or digital herpes (herpetic whitlow)—wash your hands immediately after any contact with the lesion

How can you treat and relieve a cold sore naturally?

Antiviral treatment is most effective when started early—ideally at the first signs of a flare-up (tingling), before blisters appear. Topical acyclovir (5% cream) applied 5 times a day at the first signs reduces the duration and severity of the outbreak. Oral acyclovir (prescription only) is reserved for frequent outbreaks (>6 per year) or severe cases. Applying makeup to an active lesion is not recommended—it can worsen the infection and contaminate the products.

  • Propolis: Topically applied propolis extract is the best-documented natural active ingredient against HSV-1 — direct antiviral activity (inhibits viral replication) and wound-healing properties — available as a cream or solution — comparable efficacy to acyclovir in some studies regarding the duration of the episode — apply as soon as prodromal symptoms appear
  • Lysine and arginine: HSV-1 uses arginine for replication — lysine competes with arginine and inhibits viral replication — increase intake of lysine-rich foods (fish, chicken, dairy products, legumes) and limit those high in arginine (nuts, chocolate, seeds, whole grains) may reduce the frequency of recurrences—lysin supplementation (1,000–3,000 mg/day during the outbreak) is used for prevention
  • Topical relief: ice wrapped in a cloth (2 to 5 minutes—reduces inflammation and pain)—a cooled black tea bag (antiviral tannins)—aloe vera gel (soothing and healing) — never pop the blisters (risk of bacterial infection and spread)
  • Makeup and cosmetics: Do not share lip balm, lipstick, or applicators—use a disposable applicator if coverage is needed—wait until the area has fully healed before resuming use of your usual products

How can you prevent recurrences and strengthen your natural defenses?

The frequency of recurrences varies from person to person—some people never experience them after the initial infection, while others have several episodes per year. Boosting the immune system is the primary preventive strategy. A strong immune system keeps the virus in a latent state and reduces the frequency and severity of reactivations.

  • Avoiding triggers: Use at least SPF 30 on the lips when exposed to the sun (tinted lip balm or sunscreen stick) — stress management (cardiac coherence, meditation, physical activity) — adequate sleep (7 to 9 hours) — prompt treatment of concurrent infections
  • Immunity and natural supplements: vitamin C (supports innate antiviral immunity) — zinc (a cofactor for antiviral defenses — also for topical application: zinc oxide on the lesion) — oral propolis (immunostimulant and antiviral) — as a preventive winter regimen to strengthen natural immunity
  • Medical preventive treatment: in cases of frequent (> 6/year) or severe episodes, long-term antiviral treatment (acyclovir 400 mg twice daily or valacyclovir 500 mg daily) may be prescribed — discuss with a doctor or dermatologist
  • Pregnancy and cold sores: HSV-1 can, in rare cases, be transmitted to the newborn during childbirth (neonatal herpes—rare but serious)—any cold sore on the mother or those in close contact requires strict precautions around the newborn (no kissing, hand washing)
