Sweating and Body Odor: What’s Really Going On?

Understanding how men sweat is the first step in choosing a truly effective men’s deodorant:

  • Eccrine glands: distributed throughout the body, they secrete a watery, odorless sweat (water, NaCl, urea) whose acidic pH (4.5 to 5.5) is naturally inhospitable to bacteria.
  • Apocrine glands: concentrated in the underarms and groin. Their sweat, rich in lipids and steroid precursors, is odorless when produced—odors arise from bacterial breakdown by Corynebacterium (malodorous fatty acids) and Staphylococcus hominis (sulfur thiols).
  • Men’s sweat is, on average, 40% more intense than women’s, with higher levels of steroid precursors (androsteneone, androstenol)—which requires more targeted antibacterial ingredients.

Deodorant or antiperspirant: which one should men choose for their skin?

Two radically different approaches coexist:

  • Antiperspirants (15–25% aluminum salts): block the sweat gland openings, reducing sweating by 30–50%. The ANSM and the European SCCS advise against applying them to recently shaved or damaged skin and recommend limiting the concentration to a maximum of 6.25%.
  • Natural deodorants: act on bacteria without blocking perspiration through antibacterial active ingredients (essential oils, baking soda, zinc ricinoleate, alum stone). They respect the body’s natural sweating process and the protective underarm microbiome.
  • For shaved or sensitive underarm skin, natural deodorants made with antibacterial essential oils are the safest option and the most gentle on the skin barrier.

Lemon and Grapefruit: Refreshing Antibacterial Ingredients in Natural Deodorants

Two citrus essential oils with documented antibacterial properties against odor-causing bacteria:

  • Lemon essential oil (Citrus limon, cold-pressed): Its limonene and citral inhibit the growth of Corynebacterium striatum and S. epidermidis—two of the main causes of underarm odor. Its natural acidity maintains the underarm’s protective acidic pH. Photosensitizing: Use in formulations with precautions regarding sun exposure.
  • Grapefruit essential oil (Citrus paradisi): Its naringenin inhibits the formation of underarm bacterial biofilms—a mechanism that complements its direct antibacterial action. Its fresh, fruity profile is particularly well-suited for sports deodorant formulas.

Sage and lemongrass: recognized sweat-inhibiting and odor-fighting active ingredients

Two essential oils with specific mechanisms of action on sweating and odor:

  • Salvia officinalis essential oil is one of the few natural active ingredients that reduces apocrine gland secretion when applied topically. A clinical study (Saller, 1998) confirms a 50% reduction in sweating with a standardized preparation. Caution: neurotoxic at high oral doses—safe for topical use in deodorants (0.5–1%).
  • Citronella essential oil (Cymbopogon nardus): Its citronellal and geraniol specifically inhibit Corynebacterium and S. hominis, the main producers of malodorous underarm thiols. Its insect-repellent properties are an added benefit for outdoor sports deodorants.

Patchouli and ylang-ylang: fixatives for natural men’s deodorants?

In the fragrance pyramid of a natural men’s deodorant, the base notes ensure longevity:

  • Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin): Its patchoulol and sesquiterpenes slow the evaporation of light odor molecules, prolonging the deodorizing effect by 4 to 6 hours. Its antibacterial activity against Corynebacterium and its anti-inflammatory action protect the underarm skin, which is sensitized by shaving.
  • Ylang-ylang essential oil (Cananga odorata): Its benzyl acetate and linalool regulate sebum production and have documented inhibitory activity against S. epidermidis. Its warm, floral note adds a distinctive masculine olfactory dimension to natural formulas.

How do you choose a truly effective natural deodorant for men?

Four essential properties to look for:

  • Antibacterial activity targeting Corynebacterium and Staphylococcus: lemon, sage, lemongrass, and patchouli essential oils at 0.5–2%.
  • Moisture absorption: cornstarch, baking soda, white clay—these reduce underarm moisture, which promotes bacterial growth.
  • Neutralization of existing odors: zinc ricinoleate (molecular trap for thiols and fatty acids) or baking soda (neutralization of volatile fatty acids).
  • Underarm skin tolerance: alcohol-free, aluminum salt-free, paraben-free—pH 4.5 to 5.5 to preserve the protective underarm microbiome.
