Native to western Asia and southern and central Europe, this biennial herbaceous plant of the Lamiaceae family is widely cultivated in temperate countries as an ornamental but essentially to produce an essential oil used in the manufacture of liquor or perfume. Sage was a life-saving plants from the Middle Ages. Greeks, Romans and Arabs commonly employed as a tonic and compresses against snake bites. Egyptian women used to drink sage juice to increase their fertility. "Who has sage in his garden does not need a doctor" (Provencal proverb).

Not recommended in case of fibrocystic breast and hormonal cancers.
