When should you use these flea treatment pipettes for dogs?

Fipronil/S-Methoprene Viatris for Dogs is an over-the-counter veterinary topical antiparasitic medication, available in spot-on solution pipettes. It combines two active ingredients: fipronil, an insecticide and acaricide, and (S)-methoprene, an insect growth regulator that blocks the development of flea eggs and larvae. The package contains three pipettes, dosed according to the dog’s weight. It is one of the leading flea treatments for dogs.

It is indicated for the treatment of flea infestations, either alone or in combination with ticks and/or chewing lice. A single application kills new adult fleas for 8 weeks and prevents, for the same duration, the development of eggs, larvae, and nymphs in the dog’s environment.

It is indicated for the treatment of tick infestations, with persistent acaricidal efficacy lasting up to 4 weeks. Ticks may still attach themselves, but they are generally killed within 24 to 48 hours.

Three formulations are available for dogs weighing 2 to 40 kg: small dogs (2 to 10 kg), medium dogs (10 to 20 kg), and large dogs (20 to 40 kg). The medication can also be incorporated, upon a veterinarian’s recommendation, into a treatment strategy for flea bite allergy dermatitis. It can be used in pregnant or nursing dogs.

Bathing your dog before treatment makes it easier to apply the medication to clean skin. We recommend using Beaphar Premium Gentle Dog Shampoo for All Coats for this purpose, at least 48 hours before applying the spot-on treatment—never within the two days following application.

How should this spot-on treatment be applied based on the dog’s weight?

Dosage

For external use only. Weigh the dog before selecting the pipette, then apply one pipette per dog based on its weight:

Dog’s Weight Spot-on Treatment Fipronil / (S)-methoprene
2 to 10 kg Small dog, 0.67 mL 67 mg / 60.3 mg
10 to 20 kg Medium dog, 1.34 mL 134 mg / 120.6 mg
20 to 40 kg Large dog, 2.68 mL 268 mg / 241.2 mg

Part the fur at the base of the neck, between the shoulder blades, until the skin is visible; place the tip against the skin and squeeze to empty the entire pipette at a single spot. Allow at least 4 weeks between treatments.

Precautions

  • Do not use on puppies younger than 8 weeks and/or weighing less than 2 kg, or on sick or convalescing animals.
  • Do not use in cases of hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or to any of the excipients.
  • These pipettes are intended for dogs only: do not use them on cats, ferrets, or rabbits.
  • Do not apply to a wound or broken skin. Avoid contact with the animal’s eyes.
  • Do not bathe the dog or allow it to swim in a body of water for 2 days following application.
  • Prevent the dog from licking the application site and prevent other animals from licking it. The coat at the application site may temporarily appear greasy or clumpy.
  • Do not handle the animal and keep children away until the application site is dry; do not let the animal sleep with its owners, especially children, immediately after treatment. Wash your hands after use.
  • Store the pipettes in their original packaging. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Read the package insert carefully before use and consult your pharmacist or veterinarian.

Packaging

Box of 3 single-dose spot-on pipettes, in the size corresponding to the dog’s weight: small dog (2–10 kg), medium dog (10–20 kg), or large dog (20–40 kg). Three pipettes provide up to six months of protection against fleas with one application every 8 weeks.

Our Expert Advice on Fipronil/S-Methoprene Viatris for Dogs

Weight is the deciding factor: a dog weighing exactly 10 kg falls into the first weight category; a dog that has gained weight since its last weigh-in may need a different pipette. Weigh your dog before opening each package, and never split a large pipette between two small dogs.

To combat fleas, treating the dog alone isn’t enough if the house is infested: eggs and larvae live in beds, rugs, and couches. Washing bedding at 60 °C, vacuuming, and treating all pets in the household at the same time will prevent reinfestation. To prevent ticks, inspecting the coat after every walk remains essential.
