What is Ladrôme Organic Hop Extract Mother Tincture used for?

Hops (Humulus lupulus) belong to the Cannabaceae or Moraceae family, which consists of two genera: Cannabis and Humulus. Hops are a herbaceous climbing plant native to the temperate regions of Europe, Asia, and North Africa; they thrive in moist, shaded areas and require a support around which to twine. It is known as “northern vine,” “devil’s wood,” “northern couleuvrée,” or “national sarsaparilla.” Male and female flowers do not grow on the same stems. The female flowers appear as small catkins which, as they mature, take the form of oval cones covered with brown scales concealing yellow, grainy glands. These glands contain the active ingredients, including the plant’s bitter compounds.

In herbal medicine, hops are used to relieve nervousness and sleep disorders, to stimulate appetite, and to combat symptoms associated with hormonal changes during menopause.

In North America, the Cherokee Indians use hops to relieve arthritis and pain, as well as to treat kidney-related problems. Traditional Chinese medicine also attributes healing properties to hops for treating insomnia, digestive problems, intestinal cramps, and loss of appetite. In India, Ayurvedic medicine uses hops to relieve restlessness caused by nervous tension, migraines, and indigestion.

Hops have long been used in cooking for making bread and, above all, in brewing beer. It was this latter use that led to the spread of hop cultivation throughout Europe. In fact, it was upon noticing that workers harvesting hop cones tended to fall asleep easily on the job that the idea arose that the plant might contain a sedative ingredient.

Hops belong to the Cannabaceae or Moraceae family, which also includes cannabis. This climbing plant requires a support to grow and thrive in humid, shaded environments. It produces oval cones covered with brown scales that enclose yellow glands containing the active compounds, including the plant’s characteristic bitterness.

The properties of hops, as observed and recognized in the fields of herbal medicine and traditional medicine, include:

  • Calming and Sedative Effect: Hops are known for their relaxing effect on the nervous system, making them an effective remedy for relieving nervousness and anxiety and promoting restful sleep.
  • Digestive Stimulant: It helps stimulate appetite and improve digestion, making it a valuable aid for those suffering from a lack of appetite or digestive disorders.
  • Anti-Inflammatory: Hops have anti-inflammatory properties that can help relieve the symptoms of arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.
  • Hormonal Balancing: It is used to alleviate menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes and mood swings, due to its hormone-balancing effects.
  • Antioxidant: Compounds found in hops, such as flavonoids and polyphenols, have antioxidant properties that help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.
  • Diuretic: It may help promote the elimination of toxins and waste from the body by stimulating kidney function, thereby supporting kidney health.
  • Skin Soothing: When applied topically, hops can have soothing effects on irritated or inflamed skin, thanks to their anti-inflammatory and calming properties.
