From the Compositae family (Asteraceae), burdock, otherwise known as black broth, moth grass, giant's ear, is a herbaceous, biennial, robust plant with abundant, very broad, alternate leaves and denticulate at the ends.
The origin of the word burdock remains unclear and interpretations are not left out. The word burdock would come either from the Greek arktos and would mean "bear", or from the Lyonnais "burdock" which could be understood by the word "bug", or even from the Latin barrum , which means "mud". What is certain is that the plant is known to everyone for its fruits (kinds of prickly balls) which cling to all clothing, and which are at the origin of the famous Velcro.
From its Latin name Arctium Lappa (or Arctium majus ), it is recognizable by its characteristic large heart-shaped leaves and its tube-shaped red or purplish-pink flowers surrounded by hooked bracts. Widespread in Europe, with the exception of the Mediterranean basin, it flourishes in calcareous soils and is frequently found along roadsides and in alpine meadows. Native to Asia and Europe, burdock is a plant that grows easily in most parts of the northern hemisphere.
The used parts of the plant are the roots and the leaves. Burdock is mainly used in herbal medicine for its root which concentrates its medicinal properties. Before flowering, it has several properties, including "a sudoriferous, depurative and diuretic action which notably makes it possible to fight skin infections. Burdock root contains a polysaccharide called inulin and acid-phenols, polyacetylenes, flavonoids.
Burdock helps treat certain skin conditions related to excess sebum production . Anti-inflammatory: burdock would also act "on chronic joint inflammation, rheumatism , on gout, it facilitates the elimination of inflammatory substances by combining it with other anti-inflammatory plants.
Burdock also has a draining, sudorific and depurative action which would contribute to restoring radiance and luminosity to the skin . It contains phenol acids, which promote the elimination of toxins.
Burdock is also appreciated by people with sugar metabolism disorders, which it regulates. To increase its effects, burdock can be combined with other plants, including wild pansy .
Fresh burdock leaves can be used in case of itching related to insect bites , on damaged skin , as well as in certain inflammatory manifestations.
