LEXICON

alcohol

General name for a family of substances that can be mixed with water and fats. The most common alcohol is ethyl alcohol (ethanol), but there are many other alcohols, such as methanol and butanol. The degree of an alcoholic solution corresponds to the volume of pure alcohol present in 100 ml of solution, bearing in mind that 1 balloon glass of wine or 1 half of beer (25 cl) contains around 8 g of alcohol.

When alcohol is used as an antiseptic, an unpleasant-smelling denaturant is often added to prevent it from being drunk. Contrary to popular belief, 70° (or even 60°) alcohol is a better antiseptic than 90° alcohol.

See article: Alcohol dependence

allergy

Skin reaction (itching, pimples, swelling) or general discomfort following contact with a particular substance, the use of a medication or the ingestion of a food. The main forms of allergy are eczema, urticaria, asthma, angioedema and allergic shock (anaphylactic shock). Food allergy can also lead to digestive problems.

aphta

A very painful lesion of the mouth, resembling a yellowish or gray spot, slightly hollowed out. Usually heals spontaneously after a few days.

Stress, fatigue and certain foods (walnuts, hazelnuts, Gruyère cheese, citrus fruits, etc.) can trigger an outbreak of mouth ulcers. In very rare cases, mouth ulcers may be due to illness or medication.

See article: Mouth ulcers

homeopathy

Treatment method based on two principles: the use of substances with effects similar to the symptoms of the disease they are intended to combat, and the infinitesimal dilution of these substances.

See articles: Homeopathic medicines

symptoms

Disturbance experienced by a person suffering from an illness. The same symptom may reflect different illnesses, and the same illness does not necessarily produce the same symptoms in all sufferers.

mother tincture

Solution resulting from the maceration in alcohol of a dehydrated plant, an animal (bee, etc.) or an animal extract (snake venom, etc.). The mother tincture is the substance from which the homeopathic operations of dilution and dynamization are performed.

homeopathic treatment

Treatment based on the administration of highly diluted substances of plant, animal or mineral origin. The main principles of homeopathy are similarity (use of substances producing effects similar to the symptoms of the disease), infinitesimal dilution (the substances used undergo multiple dilutions) and globality (the target of the treatment is not a particular organ, but the individual as a whole).
