The FreeStyle Libre 2, FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus and Freestyle Select sensors are continuous glucose monitors designed to help people with diabetes monitor their blood glucose levels. Although they share similar features, several key differences set them apart.
1. Sensor wear time
-
FreeStyle Libre 2: Each sensor is designed for 14 days of continuous use.
-
FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus and Libre Select: Wearing time is extended to 15 days, providing an extra day of continuous monitoring.
2. Minimum age of use
-
FreeStyle Libre 2: Suitable for adults and children aged 4 and over.
-
FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus and Libre Select: The indication is extended to children from the age of 2, enabling use in a younger paediatric population.
3. Sensor accuracy
Sensor accuracy is measured by MARD (Mean Absolute Relative Difference).
-
FreeStyle Libre 2: MARD of 9.2
-
FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus and Libre Select: Improved accuracy with a MARD of 8.2%, indicating better agreement with reference values.
4. Real-time alarms
Both systems offer optional alarms to warn of glucose levels that are too low or too high. However, the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus offers improvements in data transmission.
-
FreeStyle Libre 2: Requires manual scanning of the sensor to obtain glucose readings, even after an alert.
-
FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus and Libre Select: Offers automatic transmission of glucose readings every minute via Bluetooth, eliminating the need for frequent manual scans.
5. Compatibility with Insulin Pumps
-
FreeStyle Libre 2: Does not offer direct integration with insulin pumps.
-
FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus and Libre Select: Compatible with some insulin pumps, enabling more integrated diabetes management.
In summary, the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus brings significant improvements over the FreeStyle Libre 2, including extended wear time, use in young children from the age of 2, greater accuracy, more effective real-time alarms and compatibility with certain insulin pumps. These developments offer patients a more comfortable and accurate blood glucose monitoring experience.
Freestyle Libre Select vs Freestyle Libre 2 Plus: what are the differences?
The Freestyle Libre Select is clearly distinguished from the Freestyle Libre 2 Plus by several key technical features:
-
Extended memory capacity: the Freestyle Libre Select retains data for up to 15 days, compared with just 8 hours for the Freestyle Libre 2 Plus. A significant improvement for long-term monitoring.
-
Measurement frequency and recording: although blood glucose is measured every minute in both cases, the Freestyle Libre Select records data every 5 minutes, compared with every 15 minutes for the Freestyle Libre 2 Plus. This enables finer, more responsive monitoring of blood glucose levels.
-
Data transmission range: the Freestyle Libre Select transmits data over a distance of up to 10 meters, compared with 6 meters for the Freestyle Libre 2 Plus (in the absence of physical obstacles).
-
Richness of data collected: Freestyle Libre Select provides a complete overview of the user's blood glucose profile, including: blood glucose value, trend (direction and speed of change), blood glucose variability, and history over the last 12 hours. In comparison, the Freestyle Libre 2 Plus offers a history limited to the last 8 hours.
-
Measurement transmission mode: with the Freestyle Libre Select, data are sent automatically every minute to the Freestyle Libre 3 reader or to the dedicated application, via Bluetooth; on the other hand, the Freestyle Libre 2 Plus requires a manual scan of the sensor using the Freestyle Libre 2 reader to obtain the results.

Adhesive strips must be applied at the same time as the sensor.
Precautions for use
- The FreeStyle Libre blood glucose meters on sale in France do not have language-changing functions, as they are manufactured exclusively for French protocols, each country having its own protocols.
- Avoid using French FreeStyle Libre blood glucose sensors on devices designed for other countries, as this may distort the data as they are programmed for the countries' protocols.
- Thoroughly cleanse the skin before applying the sensor, using the alcohol-impregnated wipes supplied in this kit.
- The sensor can be left on the skin for up to 14 days (Libre 2) or 15 days (Libre 2 Plus and Libre Select). Your reader will send you a regular alert 3 days before the end of these 14 or 15 days, and you can simply change the sensor for a new use.
- The sensor must not be immersed in water for more than 30 minutes.
- The sensor should be stored between 4°C and 25°C and at a humidity level of between 10% and 90%.
