After a blow or traumatic impact (fall, collision, sports injury), the RICE protocol is the medical standard for minimizing injury:
Cryo gel (Puressentiel Gel Cryo Pure) replicates the cooling effect while delivering local anesthetic agents (peppermint, camphor) — ideal for sports or when on the go. After 48 to 72 hours, switch to gentle heat to promote the resorption of any remainingbruising and soften the tissues.
Arnica is the go-to active ingredient for bruises, sprains, and traumatic injuries. Arnica montana granules (5CH to 9CH, 5 granules every hour for the first 4 hours, then 3 times a day) reduce pain, bruising, and post-traumatic swelling. Arnigel (Boiron arnica gel), Cooper Arnican, and Lehning Organic Arnica should be applied with a light massage to the bruised area 3 to 4 times a day—never on an open wound. Bellis perennis (5–9CH) complements arnica for deep blows with significant bruising. Z-Trauma Gel (arnica + essential oils of wintergreen, wintergreen, and rosemary) is a hybrid phytotherapy-aromatherapy formula in an organic gel form for broad synergistic action.
Hémoclar (0.5% heparinoid cream) promotes the resorption of subcutaneous blood clots (ecchymosis, “bruises”) by locally inhibiting coagulation. Apply with a gentle massage 2 to 3 times a day to the visible bruise, avoiding open wounds. Contraindicated in patients taking oral anticoagulants and in cases of heparin allergy. It is particularly effective for superficial hematomas (shins, thighs, arms) and can be used alternately with arnica gel. Vegebom Universal Relief Balm (camphor + eucalyptus + menthol + thymol) is a natural alternative for minor bruises and strains, providing local anesthetic relief.
Muscle strains and minor tears often occur during sports-related impacts—such as sprinting, sudden changes in direction, or maximum exertion without a warm-up. Local cryotherapy is the first line of treatment (within 15 minutes of the injury). Synthol (camphor + lidocaine + terpinol) is the classic topical antiseptic and analgesic used on sports fields—it works through a local anesthetic effect (lidocaine) and a rubificant effect (camphor) when rubbed vigorously into the affected area. Puressentiel Cryo Pure gel (menthol + camphor + wintergreen + arnica) combines the cooling effect with the anti-inflammatory effect of arnica. These treatments are for first aid only—any muscle strain accompanied by severe pain or loss of function requires medical evaluation to rule out a partial or complete muscle tear. Chronic pain persisting beyond 3 weeks after an injury should be evaluated by a doctor or physical therapist.
Homeopathy offers different remedies depending on the type and location of the injury. Arnica montana: universal, for blows and blunt trauma. Bellis perennis: deep injuries to muscles and abdominal organs. Ledum palustre: deep puncture wounds, stab wounds, joint injuries relieved by cold. Ruta graveolens: tendons, ligaments, periosteum (wrist, ankle, elbow). Symphytum officinale (comfrey): bone injuries, fractures, periostitis. These remedies are used in 9 to 15CH potency, 5 granules 3 to 4 times a day, with the frequency reduced as symptoms improve. Chronic joint pain triggered by a recent injury requires specific complementary treatment.
Not all injuries can be treated at home. A medical consultation or visit to the emergency room is essential in the event of: visible deformity of the limb (probable fracture or dislocation), total functional impairment (inability to put weight on the foot or move the limb), intense and persistent pain that does not subside with rest, a large and rapidly expanding bruise, or signs of shock (pallor, sweating, tachycardia, fainting). An X-ray is essential to rule out a fracture before any local treatment with arnica or Synthol. Severe post-traumatic joint inflammation (heat, redness, significant joint swelling) suggests hemarthrosis or reactive arthritis, requiring a diagnostic joint aspiration. Synthol is never indicated for open wounds or damaged skin—it should be applied only to healthy skin, away from the eyes and mucous membranes.
