What is skin depigmentation?

Depigmentation refers to a localized loss of melanin, resulting in areas of skin that are lighter than the surrounding skin tone. This phenomenon encompasses a wide range of conditions: depigmentation following the healing of a skin lesion or a psoriasis flare-up, autoimmune-related depigmentation such as vitiligo, or even intentional depigmentation achieved through the use of skin-lightening products—a practice that carries serious health risks you should be aware of.

What causes localized depigmentation?

Depigmentation can occur after the healing of a burn, a deep wound, or a flare-upof eczema: the melanocytes in the affected area may temporarily or permanently produce less melanin once the inflammation has subsided. A cosmetic procedure that is too aggressive (deep chemical peel, improperly calibrated laser treatment) can also damage the melanocytes and leave a lighter-colored area, sometimes permanently.

Is post-inflammatory hypopigmentation reversible?

Reversibility depends on the depth of the damage to the melanocytes: superficial and recent depigmentation is more likely to fade gradually over several months, whereas deep or long-standing damage makes it more difficult for local melanin production to resume. The underlying scar also plays a role: dense scar tissue limits recolonization by functional melanocytes.

What is intentional depigmentation, and what are its risks?

Voluntary depigmentation, or intentional skin lightening, sometimes involves the prolonged and unsupervised use of products containing strong corticosteroids, high-concentration hydroquinone, or mercury salts, substances whose over-the-counter sale is strictly regulated or even prohibited in France due to their serious adverse effects: irreversible skin atrophy, stretch marks, paradoxical hyperpigmentation (exogenous ochronosis), weakening of the skin barrier—sometimes requiring restorative treatments withallantoin—and systemic absorption that can affect other organs. These practices pose risks that are disproportionate to the desired aesthetic benefit and should never be undertaken without medical supervision.

What soothing skincare products should be used for depigmented skin?

Skin that has undergone depigmentation, regardless of the cause, often remains more fragile and requires soothing, non-aggressive skincare. Centella asiatica is traditionally used to support skin comfort in weakened areas, as a complement to a gentle skincare routine that avoids any new irritants on the affected area.

When should you seek medical advice for skin depigmentation?

A dermatology consultation is recommended for any depigmentation that is spreading, appears without an identified cause, or affects a large area of the body, in order to determine the exact cause and evaluate available treatment options. Since depigmented areas are particularly vulnerable to UV rays due to the absence of protective melanin, high-SPF sunscreen is essential in these areas, both in summer and winter.
