26/08/2021 Medicinal plants and herbal medicine

Small, perennial and rustic, one cannot say without blushing that lady’s mantle has the finery of certain plants that are much more sensual and lush. What, however, characterizes Lady’s mantle is its ability to collect dew within its leaves . In reality, this water is not only made up of dew, it is also made up of vegetable water excreted by the plant itself: it is called “celestial water”. Because having all the characteristics of perfect purity , it is said that this water was used by some alchemists in their quest for the Philosopher’s Stone … A little history The infatuation of Paracelsus for lady’s mantle undoubtedly explains the considerable...

Harpagophytum, the claw of the Devil of healers

17/11/2021 Medicinal plants and herbal medicine

Harpago , which means grapple or harpoon in Latin, and from the Greek phuton , which is translated by plant, vegetable , gives its name to harpagophytum because its fruits are provided with hooks curved in the shape of grapples; they cling to the fur and hooves of animals which frantically struggle in all directions to get rid of them, hence its other name of “Devil’s Claw” . A little history The native Bushmen and Bantu used the roots by mouth to treat ingestion, fever and pains associated with childbirth ; externally, as an ointment, for the treatment of small wounds and skin diseases . In South Africa, it is also traditionally used against seizures in children. It was a German...

01/10/2021 Medicinal plants and herbal medicine

A medical material, a tinctorial plant but also a spice, turmeric has provided its benefits to men for 3,000 years . This perennial plant, some specimens of which nowadays adorn florists’ shops, is best known for its underground parts which, like ginger, are in fact made up of rhizomes. A little history Turmeric has been known to the Western world since Antiquity if we believe the descriptions given by Dioscorides . In Europe, in the 17th century, Lémery indeed considered it as an aperitif and as “suitable for removing obstructions in the spleen, for treating jaundice and stone” (by stone to mean lithiasis). In the 19th century, it was also used as a stimulant for the...
