What is Xolaam used for?

Xolaam chewable tablet is indicated for the treatment of pain, heartburn or heartburn of the stomach and esophagus, as well as acid reflux. It belongs to the antacid class and acts by neutralizing gastric acidity.

It acts locally in the stomach, with no significant systemic action. Its formulation combines two complementary active substances, aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide, which exert a buffering action on hydrochloric acid. This chemical interaction rapidly reduces excess acidity, helping to alleviate burning sensations, reduce epigastric pain and limit irritation of the mucous membranes of the stomach and esophagus.

Xolaam's antacid action is aimed exclusively at relieving symptoms, without treating the underlying cause of hyperacidity. It is therefore used in situations where digestive disorders are moderate and transient, notably after copious meals or during occasional episodes of acid reflux. This approach enables rapid improvement in digestive comfort, while respecting the physiological balance of the digestive system.

Xolaam is reserved for adults and adolescents over the age of 15. Its chewable or suckable form, with no need for water, makes it easy to administer in the event of temporary digestive discomfort.

This digestive medication can be used on an occasional basis after a meal or for moderate digestive problems. It is also compatible with breast-feeding. In the event of pregnancy, it can only be used on medical advice.

Xolaam is designed to relieve symptoms such as acid reflux. In the event of underlying pathology or persistence of symptoms beyond the recommended duration, medical advice is required to reassess treatment.

We also offer a sachet form of Maalox Maux d'Estomac, at the best price in our online pharmacy.

Expert advice

Xolaam is a reference antacid often recommended in pharmacies for the symptomatic treatment of gastric hyperacidity. Its combination of aluminum and magnesium ensures rapid neutralization of acidity, while limiting the side effects associated with a single compound. Its chewable form is associated with a minty taste. In pharmacy practice, this type of treatment is regularly recommended as a first-line treatment, particularly for occasional heartburn. Its good tolerance profile, even when breast-feeding, makes it a suitable choice for occasional use.

Warning

It is preferable to consult a physician in the following situations:

digestive problems appearing for the first time, or if problems have changed recently;problems associated with weight loss;difficulty swallowing or persistent abdominal discomfort.

Do not use this product for prolonged periods without consulting your doctor: tests may be required if symptoms persist.

In view of the aluminum content of this drug, precautions should be taken in patients with kidney failure undergoing dialysis.

People suffering from stomach pain should avoid using drugs containing aspirin or NSAIDs, which weaken the stomach lining. Paracetamol, on the other hand, is safe for treating pain and fever.

Drug interactions

Paracetamol may reduce the absorption of many drugs. A delay of at least 2 hours (or 4 hours with quinolone antibiotics) must be observed between taking this drug and other treatments. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Fertility, pregnancy and breast-feeding

The substances contained in this medicine are poorly absorbed. Nevertheless, do not use it for prolonged periods during pregnancy or while breast-feeding without the advice of your doctor or pharmacist.

Directions for use and dosage

This medicine should be taken at the time of pain or acid reflux.

Usual dosage :

  • Adults and adolescents over 15: 1 to 2 tablets or 1 tablespoon of drinkable suspension, 1 to 6 times a day.

Treatment should not exceed 10 days without medical advice.

Advice

Shake bottle vigorously before use. Do not refrigerate.

A balanced diet, slow mastication, elimination of hard-to-digest foods and alcoholic beverages can often alleviate symptoms of acid reflux or stomach inflammation.

If you are a smoker, continued smoking is a major obstacle to treatment; nicotine increases gastric acidity and reduces the effectiveness of the muscle that closes the junction between the esophagus and the stomach.

Possible side effects

Constipation or diarrhea: aluminum salts promote constipation, while magnesium may have a laxative effect. Depending on the individual, one or other of these effects may predominate.

Unknown frequency: allergic reaction (itching, urticaria, shock).

LEXICON

antacid

Drug that neutralizes the acidity of gastric secretions or blocks the glands responsible for acid secretion.

shock

Sudden, severe malaise with a drop in blood pressure. The main causes of shock are allergies (allergic or anaphylactic shock), severe cardiovascular disorders (cardiovascular shock) and septicemia (septic shock).

dialysis

A method of purifying blood in cases of severe renal failure, essentially using an artificial kidney.

renal failure

Inability of the kidneys to eliminate waste products or drug substances. Advanced renal failure does not necessarily mean a reduction in the quantity of urine eliminated. Only a blood test and creatinine level can reveal this condition.

allergic reaction

Reaction caused by the body's hypersensitivity to a drug. Allergic reactions can take many forms: urticaria, angioedema, eczema, measles-like rash, etc. Anaphylactic shock is the most common. Anaphylactic shock is a generalized allergic reaction that causes a sudden drop in blood pressure.

See article: Can you be allergic to medicines?

sucrose

Sucrose is the substance that makes up cooking sugar and the industrial sugar found in cookies, cakes, sweets and sweetened drinks (a liter-and-a-half bottle of soda contains the equivalent of thirty lumps of sugar). Some people are intolerant to the fructose produced by the digestion of sucrose, and suffer from bloating and diarrhoea. Some medicines contain sucrose as an excipient (a component with no therapeutic activity).

See article: Are all carbohydrates the same?

sorbitol

Sorbitol is a sugar found in certain fruits (prunes, for example). Because it has fewer calories than industrial sugar (sucrose), it is used as a sweetener (under the acronym E420) and also as a stabilizer, for example in certain medicines. During digestion, sorbitol is converted into fructose (fruit sugar). Some people have difficulty digesting fructose, and consequently experience intestinal problems (diarrhea) when ingesting products containing sorbitol.

urticaria

Rash of pimples on the skin, most often of allergic origin. The pimples resemble nettle stings and vary in color from pale pink to red. Urticaria can appear or disappear within minutes, causing intense itching; it can be localized or generalized to the entire skin surface.
