What are the therapeutic benefits of Cannabidiol (CBD)?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the main phytocannabinoids found in theCannabis sativa plant, along with THC. Cannabidiol has multiple pharmacological targets. CBD has a very low affinity for the CB1 receptor, which explains why it is not a “cannabis mimetic” and does not produce the psychoactive effects of THC. CBD has pleiotropic effects, particularly on serotonin receptors (5HT1A), dopamine D2 receptors, GABA receptors, the TRP (transient receptor potential) channel, and glutamatergic systems—which may explain certain neurological and psychoactive effects. As such, its action in the brain (via these brain receptors) makes it a psychoactive substance in its own right.

Isolated in 1963, cannabidiol—better known as CBD—is gradually becoming one of the most widely used natural alternatives for treating a wide range of common conditions.

Until recently, it was the psychoactive component of cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), that received the most attention due to its medicinal benefits and its ability to produce psychotropic effects. Today, as medical cannabis gains ground across the country, researchers are discovering the amazing properties of new cannabinoids.

What makes CBD so special?

Cannabidiol is a cannabinoid believed to have various effects. Because of its many medical benefits, CBD is used to treat a number of common conditions, including chronic pain, inflammation, seizures, insomnia, spasms, multiple sclerosis, and mental health conditions such asanxietyand depression.

As a topical agent, CBD oil can be applied directly to specific areas of the body as an effective way to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and alleviate inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis, dermatitis, andeczema.

Since CBD oil is non-psychoactive, its use does not produce mind-altering effects, unlike THC.

How does CBD work in the body?

In the human body, CBD, like all cannabinoids, interacts with the endocannabinoid system, which is distributed throughout the body.
It exerts its effects via CB1 receptors (found primarily in the brain and central nervous system), for which it has only a weak antagonistic affinity. As a result, it has the ability to mitigate certain effects of THC (which has a strong affinity for the CB1 receptor).

It also acts as an inverse agonist at CB2 receptors (found primarily in the peripheral nervous system and immune system organs), for which it has a high affinity, giving it properties that help regulate homeostasis.

CBD has multiple mechanisms of action:

The Role of CBD in Reducing Certain Mental Health Symptoms

CBD does indeed have relaxing and soothing properties and reduces stress. It is particularly credited with anxiolytic effects because it provides numerous benefits to people suffering from post-traumatic stress.

CBD also has positive effects on mood, as well as sedative properties that improve sleep. Furthermore, it possessesantipsychotic potential that helps patients suffering from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or other mental health conditions. Furthermore, unlike other antipsychotic medications, CBD has no side effects.

Regarding anxiolytic effects, several studies—primarily conducted on animals—suggest that CBD reduces stress and anxiety in both their behavioral and physiological aspects. It even appears that anxiolytic effects can be observed with small doses of CBD—specifically, less than 5 mg per kilogram. Clinical studies involving human subjects support this finding and suggest that CBD is, in fact, effective in reducing anxiety.

CBD in the Prevention of Chronic and Neurodegenerative Diseases and the Strengthening of the Immune System

More specifically, CBD inhibits tumor growth by limiting the migration of cancer cells, thereby potentially preventing the development of metastases. It also induces apoptosis (a process by which cells trigger their own self-destruction). It is therefore believed to be effective against various tumor-related diseases and cancers. Furthermore, through its neuroprotective effects, CBD can reduce the severity of symptoms in certain neurodegenerative diseases. For example, it helps prevent certain cognitive impairments in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, and in people with diabetes, it reduces high blood pressure—which can lead to long-term complications such as cardiovascular disease—and may even help stabilize blood sugar levels.

The effectiveness of CBD in preventing or treating serious and/or chronic diseases has been extensively studied and documented to date. CBD provides beneficial effects in the treatment of several diseases in which the immune system is involved, such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, arthritis, and other neurological disorders or inflammatory conditions. In particular, it has anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects—meaning it stimulates or suppresses immune system responses—as well as neuroprotective effects by protecting brain cells. For example, several animal studies have shown a reduction in the growth of cancerous tumors and inhibition of metastasis following CBD administration.
