More details
Every year, as school starts, it’s the same story with lice infestations on our children’s heads. Lice and nitsare not caused by poor hygiene on the part of our children. Close contact and group settings are the two main factors that contribute to lice transmission. Lice do not pose a health risk, but they cause unpleasant itching.
Itching and head scratching are the first signs of an infestation. Lice are usually found at the hairline, at the base of the neck, or behind the ears.
To choose an appropriate treatment for eliminating lice, it is important to understand the life cycle of lice and nits.
There are also some simple steps you can take to prevent reinfestation andaddress seasonal needs. First, nits—which look like oval, gray or yellowish eggs about the size of a grain of sand—are attached to the hair near the scalp. Nits hatch after 7 to 10 days, giving way to nymphs. These resemble adult lice but are smaller. Then, seven days after hatching, the nymphs develop into adult lice and lay more nits.
Lice treatment has a dual purpose: it must eliminate both nits (niticide treatment) and lice (pediculicide treatment). To achieve this, there are chemical methods using antiparasitic treatments and mechanical methods involving suffocation.
Insecticide-based lice treatments, found in anti-parasitic shampoos, should not be used alone but in combination with a complementary lice-killing lotion.
Directions for use: For example, with Apasiyl anti-lice lotion, apply the anti-parasitic lotion, then wash sheets, pillowcases, caps, clothing, stuffed animals, and any other items that have come into contact with the parasites in hot water.
Asphyxiating lice treatments are non-toxic due to their mechanical action. The louse has small openings on its abdomen that allow it to exchange gases and water with the outside environment (unlike our skin, its thick exoskeleton does not allow it to do so without these openings). Nits have the same type of openings at their tips, called micropyles.
Lotions and ointments are available to cover the entire head of hair, section by section. According to dermatologists, this is the least aggressive method. But be careful: lice can survive for eight hours without oxygen, so to be effective, the treatment must be left on overnight.
Coconut oil is a very fine vegetable oil that can seep into the louse’s breathing holes, ultimately suffocating it. Lice are able to close their pores in water, for example, and can survive there for 24 hours. However, coconut oil blocks the breathing holes, so the lice die quickly.
Working on the same principle as coconut oil, green clay traps the lice and suffocates them, while also soothing an itchy scalp.
Aromatherapy is one of the most effective natural remedies against lice.
Thelice comb available at pharmacies to complete the treatment: Comb through the hair strand by strand, preferably on wet hair. Clean the comb after each pass to remove any lice and nits that have become caught in it.
As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure—the best way to fight lice is to protect yourself from them!
To do this, we recommend washing your children’s hair with anatural anti-lice shampooonce a week. The natural active ingredients will protect your children from a possible infestation. You can even enhance the effect with ananti-lice conditioner, whichwill provide extra protection and also detangle the hair—ideal for little girls or boys with long hair!
If an outbreak is reported, reach for your natural anti-lice lotion right away. Once a week for 3 weeks, apply the lotion to your child’s hair roots and let it sit before using an anti-lice shampoo.
Also, be sure to treat your bedding with a lice-prevention spray specifically designed totreat your living environment. These little critters don’t just stay on our heads—they love cozy spots like our pillows or couches, where they come to relax and lay their eggs. A louse can lay up to 10 nits a day—that’s 300 nits over the course of its adult life—so just imagine the nest that could be hiding in our pillows and bed!
To get rid of nits and lice, nothing beats a green clay mask with lavender essential oil and coconut oil—a true lice repellent. To make it, mix organic green clay with a little water and a tablespoon of coconut oil until you get a fairly thick paste, then add five drops of lavender essential oil.
