What is the purpose of the Freestyle blood glucose meter?
Abbott's new FreeStyle Libre 2 and Libre 3 blood glucose meters let you check your blood glucose in 1 second, painlessly and without a single drop of blood.
The Freestyle Libre 2 meter is compatible with Freestyle Libre 2 and Freestyle Libre 2 Plus sensors. It enables blood glucose data to be read via a manual scan of the sensor, which is necessary to obtain the measurements, even in the event of an alert.

This sensor transmits data automatically, continuously and in real time via Bluetooth, without the need for scanning. This direct, constant communication makes for a smoother blood glucose monitoring experience, especially for users wishing to monitor without manual intervention.

How do I use this device to control blood glucose levels?
The FreeStyle Libre tablet measures glucose levels by inserting a filament under the skin at the moment of injection. And when the patient wants to know his or her glucose level, he or she can pass the meter over the tablet. This can be applied over clothing. Once they've done this, all they have to do is look at the screen to see the value corresponding to their glucose level.
Precautions for use
- Cleanse skin thoroughly before applying the sensor.
- The sensor can be left on the skin for up to 14 or 15 days (depending on the sensor). Your meter will send you a regular alert 3 days before the end of the 14 or 15 days, and you can simply change the sensor for a new use.
- The sensor must not be immersed in water for more than 30 minutes.
- The reader is rechargeable and has a battery life of 7 days.

Our advice and opinions from pharmacy experts
Usually, patients use needles to calculate blood glucose levels. However, Abbott Diabetes Care has launched a real innovation with the FreeStyle Libre system. Instead of a needle, this device scans the patient's body and displays the evolution of blood glucose levels on a screen.
First and foremost, Abbott Diabetes Care's aim is to help diabetics and, above all, reduce the burden of monitoring their condition. With this in mind, the glucose meters on the FreeStyle Libre consist of a meter and a sensor. The latter takes the form of a two-euro coin and is placed on the back of the patient's arm. The equipment can be used for two weeks at a rate of one minute per day.
