Eyelashes are specialized sensory hairs that protect the cornea from foreign bodies and irritants. Each eyelash is anchored in a hair follicle along the eyelid margin, surrounded by a Zeiss gland (a sebaceous gland that lubricates the base of the eyelash) and a Moll gland (a modified sweat gland). Their life cycle is shorter than that of scalp hair: an anagen phase lasting 30 to 45 days, followed by a telogen phase of 100 days before natural shedding. The health of eyelashes depends directly on the health of the follicle, the adjacent Zeiss gland, and the nutritional quality provided by the perifollicular microcirculation.
Borage oil (22–26% GLA) is the plant source with the highest concentration of gamma-linolenic acid—a precursor to prostaglandin E1, which improves follicular microcirculation and reduces peri-follicular inflammation. At a dose of 500 mg to 1 g per day, it benefits all keratinized structures. Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) contains methionine, cysteine, and lysine in optimal proportions for eyelash keratin synthesis—at 2 to 5 g per day, it provides a complete protein supply for follicles in the active anagen phase.
Improper use of an eyelash curler is one of the main causes of traumatic eyelash breakage. The correct technique: gently warm the rubber pad (10 seconds against the palm), position it at the base of the open eyelashes, apply gentle pressure by pinching for 3 to 5 seconds, then gradually release without pulling. Never curl your lashes after applying mascara—dried mascara forms a rigid bridge between the lashes, causing them to break at the base under pressure. Replace the pads every 3 to 4 months—hardened rubber pinches without curling and pulls out the lashes.
A clogged or infected follicle does not respond to active serums. Steriblef and Blephaclean wipes or Blephagel gel remove mascara residue, bacterial flakes, and demodex mites that colonize the follicles and cause blepharitis and eyelash loss. For sensitive eyelids, sterile, preservative-free wipes are preferable. The optimal routine: eyelid wipe → eyelash serum → mascara in the morning; makeup removal → eyelid wipe → eyelash serum → eye contour treatment in the evening.
A fortifying eyelash serum (Ecrinal Fortifying Gel, Même Revitalizing Serum, Vitry ToniCils) is applied to clean lashes at the root and acts on follicular biology over 6 to 12 weeks—it improves strength, density, or length through nourishing or stimulating active ingredients. A booster or primer is applied before mascara and provides immediate visual thickening through the application of fibers or lightweight waxes—without affecting the follicular biology. The two combine perfectly: serum at night, primer + mascara in the morning.
The choice of accessories enhances the results of active treatments. The precision eyelash curler (Vitry) with soft silicone pads is gentler than models with rigid springs. Vitry’s Longcils Boncza (water-based cake mascara) is one of the oldest documented volumizing mascaras—its minimalist formula is well-tolerated by sensitive eyes and reactive eyelids. For eye contour care and dark circles, specialized products round out the eyelash care routine for an overall enhanced look.
