Halitosis, what are the causes?
The halitosis, more commonly known as bad breath is a common inconvenience, often lived shamefully.
Patients suffering from bad breath, clinically identified by a halimeter generally have bleeding gums in the survey, a coated tongue of a bacterial film and a dry mouth.
Halitosis can have two origins: intra-oral and extra-oral.
The intraoral original halitosis implicated in 85% of cases, is caused by a bacterial reservoir (back of the tongue, saliva, periodontal pockets). The activity of anaerobic bacteria in saliva and food residue produces volatile sulfur compounds (CVS), particularly smelly: the hydrogen sulfates and methyl mercaptan.
In the case of an extra-oral source of halitosis: it will be up to 10% the result of benign ENT diseases, and 5% of gastric or endocrine pathologies. (3)
This type of halitosis is to distinguish a bad breath caused by transitory consumption odorous foods (garlic, onion), coffee, or alcohol and smoking. There are also transient morning halitosis due to decreased salivary flow overnight. These types of bad breath are physiological and transient. The ousting of the consumption of these products, combined with oral hydration will keep a healthy breath.
Dental disease can also give bad breath, measuring CVS in the mouth is a useful method for predicting the presence of periodontal bacteria in dental plaque. In these cases, it is necessary to treat the cause to address secondary halitosis.
Remember to consult your dentist regularly.
