What is coryza, and how does it differ from other infections?

Coryza —the medical term for the common cold —is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract (nose, throat, sinuses). In 40 to 50% of cases, it is caused by rhinoviruses, and in the remaining cases by seasonal coronaviruses, parainfluenza viruses, RSV, and others. Adults get it 2 to 4 times a year on average, while children get it up to 8 to 10 times. Natural products to help manage winter illnesses and respiratory conditions are available in the store.

It is important to distinguish it from the flu and COVID-19, as treatment differs. The common cold is characterized by a gradual onset of symptoms (unlike the flu, which has a sudden onset), no fever or only a very mild fever (< 38 °C), and a predominance of nasal symptoms (congestion, runny nose) over general symptoms. The flu causes a sudden high fever, intense muscle aches, and debilitating fatigue. COVID-19 can present as a common cold but may sometimes be accompanied by a loss of smell and a variable course of the illness.

  • Symptoms of the common cold: nasal congestion — runny nose (clear discharge turning mucopurulent within 3 to 5 days — this is normal and does not indicate a bacterial superinfection) — sneezing — mild throat irritation — possible dry cough — moderate fatigue — headache — mild fever or no fever
  • Transmission: respiratory droplets (coughing, sneezing) — indirect contact (contaminated surfaces followed by contact with the nose, eyes, or mouth) — frequent self-inoculation — incubation period of 1 to 3 days — contagious 1 to 2 days before the onset of symptoms and during the first 4 to 5 days
  • Duration: 7 to 10 days on average — nasal congestion and runny nose subside within 7 days — cough may persist for 2 to 3 weeks — if no improvement after 10 days, consider sinusitis, a secondary infection, or an allergy

What natural remedies and symptomatic treatments are available for the common cold?

There is no specific antiviral treatment for rhinoviruses—treatment is exclusively symptomatic. Rest and hydration (1.5 to 2 L/day) remain the cornerstones: water thins nasal secretions and supports the immune response. Nasal decongestants (xylometazoline, oxymetazoline) provide rapid relief from congestion but should not be used for more than 5 to 7 days (risk of rebound effect). Nasal rinses with saline solution or seawater are recommended for adults and children to flush out viruses and thin mucus.

  • Effective natural remedies: honey (1 to 2 teaspoons—soothes the throat, has mild antibacterial properties—not recommended for children under 1 year old)—steam inhalations with eucalyptus (cineole, a decongestant) — thyme tea (expectorant and respiratory antiseptic) — ginger and honey tea (anti-inflammatory and soothing) — propolis nasal or oral spray (antiviral and immunostimulant properties)
  • Vitamins and Immunity: vitamin C (does not prevent the common cold in people without a deficiency but may reduce its duration and severity) — zinc (taken within 24 hours of the first symptoms, reduces the duration of the illness according to studies) — vitamin D (deficiency is associated with increased vulnerability to winter infections)
  • Diet and hydration: hot broths (hydration + decongestant steam + electrolytes) — citrus fruits, kiwi, bell peppers (vitamin C) — garlic (allicin—mild antiviral properties) — avoid alcohol and tobacco (irritate mucous membranes, reduce local defenses)
  • When to seek medical attention: prolonged fever > 38.5 °C — difficulty breathing — severe unilateral sinus pain (sinusitis) — symptoms that worsen after an initial improvement — elderly people, infants, pregnant women, or immunocompromised individuals

How can you prevent the common cold and limit its spread?

Preventing the common cold relies on simple but effective preventive measures. Handwashing is the most effective measure: rhinoviruses can survive for several hours on surfaces, and self-inoculation (contaminated hand → nose or eyes) is the primary mode of transmission. Washing hands with soap for 20 seconds or using hand sanitizer for a few seconds eliminates the viruses present.

  • Personal prevention: frequent handwashing (before meals, after touching shared surfaces) — avoid touching your nose, eyes, and mouth — regularly ventilate indoor spaces (15 minutes in the morning and evening) — humidify indoor air (rhinoviruses thrive better in dry, cold air) — maintain immune function (adequate sleep, physical activity, balanced diet)
  • In group settings: use disposable tissues (single-use only—cloth tissues retain active viruses)—wear a mask if symptomatic (protects others)—ventilate shared spaces—stay home for the first few days (peak contagiousness)
  • Recovery: Gradually resume activities after the fever subsides — fatigue may persist for 2 to 3 days after the acute phase — do not rush back to sports until symptoms have completely disappeared
