When should you use Eyes Expert on sensitive skin around the eyes?

Eyes Expert Soothing and Decongesting Treatment is a gel designed exclusively for the eye area—the area where the skin is thinnest on the face and where even the slightest use of an unsuitable product is immediately noticeable. Its formula combines bisabolol—a molecule extracted from candeia wood—a licorice root derivative, and dextran sulfate in a fragrance-free base with a pH level similar to that of tears.

This gel helps soothe and decongest the eye area. Licorice and bisabolol are two classic active ingredients in skincare formulated for reactive skin, and dextran sulfate complements the formula by addressing puffiness. After application, the skin appears smoother, softer, and better hydrated.

As for dark circles, the effect is primarily perceptual: users report feeling as though their dark circles have diminished. The formula also contains mineral pigments—mica and titanium dioxide—which reflect light and alter how the shadow of the dark circle appears on the skin’s surface.

There are three situations where it’s particularly useful: long days spent in front of a screen, reactive skin that can’t tolerate rich textures, and contact lens wearers. The gel is suitable for contact lens wearers; its non-greasy texture absorbs quickly and leaves no residue, allowing it to be applied before any other skincare products and used as a makeup primer. It is thus one of the lightest textures in our eye care line.

Makeup removal sets the stage for everything else: an eye area rubbed every night with a product that’s too harsh will remain sensitive, no matter what you apply afterward. For this reason, we recommendAvène Essentiels Gentle Eye Makeup Remover, which is also isotonic with tears: it dissolves makeup without rubbing, and the gel is then applied to clean, dry skin.

How do you apply this soothing and decongesting gel?

Directions for Use

Apply 2 to 3 times a day, moving from the inner to the outer corner of the eye. This gel should be used before any other skincare products and can serve as a makeup base.

Precautions

  • For external use only, on the eye area. Avoid direct contact with the eye; if contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  • Do not apply to open wounds or broken skin.
  • The gel is suitable for contact lens wearers; however, avoid getting it on the lens itself and wait for it to be fully absorbed before inserting the lens.
  • Do not use if you have a known allergy to any of the ingredients. The formula contains beeswax and macadamia oil; be aware of this if you have an allergy to bee products or tree nuts.
  • Product intended for adults: it is not suitable for children 3 years of age or younger, as its preservative is not recommended in leave-on products for this age group.
  • If you experience eye redness, swelling of a single eyelid, pain, or visual discomfort, discontinue use and seek medical advice.
  • Close the tube tightly after each use; store at room temperature away from light; keep out of reach of children; and use within 12 months of opening.

Our expert advice on Eyes Expert for the eye area

The first mistake we see every day at the counter: people pat the eye area instead of massaging it. The skin there is three to four times thinner than on the rest of the face, and rubbing does more harm than the product provides benefit. A rice-grain-sized amount is enough for both eyes; apply it from the inner corner toward the temple, along the orbital bone, and never on the mobile eyelid or right along the lash line. This gel contains mica and titanium dioxide pigments: its texture catches the light, which is something to keep in mind for those seeking a completely transparent formula.

As for frequency, two to three applications daily—one in the morning and one at night—are recommended, with a third midday on days when you’re feeling tired. When stored in the refrigerator, the gel feels cooler upon application, making it more pleasant to use in the summer. One final point to keep in mind: this product is a cosmetic; it works on the appearance of the skin around the eyes and nothing else. Swelling affecting only one eyelid, a red eye, pain, or blurred vision require an ophthalmologist’s evaluation and are not issues for a beauty treatment.

FAQ

Can I use Eyes Expert Soothing and Decongestant Treatment if I wear contact lenses?

Yes, the gel is formulated for contact lens wearers: it is fragrance-free and its pH is similar to that of tears. Apply it to the skin around the eyes—never on the contact lens or inside the eye—and it’s best to wait until it’s fully absorbed before inserting your contact lenses.

Can I apply makeup after using Eyes Expert Soothing and Decongesting Treatment?

Yes. This gel is non-greasy, absorbs quickly, and is meant to be used before any other skincare products—including as a makeup primer. Concealer and eyeshadow can be applied afterward, once the skin is dry.

Can I use Eyes Expert Soothing and Decongesting Treatment on sensitive eyes?

That is the product’s purpose: the line is tested under ophthalmological supervision, and the formula is fragrance-free. A known allergy to beeswax, tree nuts, or any of the ingredients listed in the INCI remains a reason to avoid using it, and a patch test on the inner elbow before the first application will resolve any doubts.

How long can I use Eyes Expert Soothing and Decongesting Eye Care?

This product is intended for daily use with no time limit, as long as it is well tolerated. The only restriction is the shelf life after opening, which is 12 months: after this period, an opened tube should no longer be used.
