The flu is highly contagious. It spreads from an infected person to a healthy person through tiny droplets of moisture that our bodies expel as aerosols when breathing, sneezing, coughing, or having a runny nose.
To become infected, one must inhale a sufficient amount of these droplets and have a susceptible immune system. Once the flu virus binds to cell receptors, it immediately invades the cells and forces them to produce new viruses, which ultimately kills the cells.
What are the symptoms of the flu?
The incubation period for the flu virus lasts 24 to 48 hours. After this incubation period, the first physical symptoms caused by the illness begin to appear. Note that a person is contagious for about 6 days, including the day before symptoms begin.
The symptoms are actually a reflection of our body’s immune response:
- fatigue
- headaches
- chills
- muscle and joint pain
- fever, sometimes high (39–40°C)
These symptoms may be accompanied by nasal congestion, sore throat, and cough. This is when complications can arise because the lining of the respiratory tract is irritated, and cells are weakened or dead. As a result, pathogens can take advantage of the opening created by the flu virus to enter our bodies and multiply there as well. In this case only, antibiotics may be indicated.
Most people make a full recovery within one to two weeks.
