Our advice and expert opinions from pharmacists
Our feet—organs as essential as they are sensitive—support us all day, sometimes even at night, and year-round… Often mistreated by wearing ill-fitting shoes, they’re also frequently overlooked in our daily care routines. Corns and calluses then develop, making it difficult to walk.
A corn is a skin reaction to mechanical stress. As a result of a minor deformity or when shoes are too tight, there is prolonged and repeated friction. The skin thickens in the affected area and hardens, forming a corn… or a callus, which affects a larger area, such as certain parts of the soles of the feet. A corn is therefore not a wart (caused by a virus), even though a wart can cause the skin to thicken. Nor is it a hallux valgus, or “bunion,” which causes a deformity of the forefoot, although a bunion inevitably leads to corns and calluses over time.
