Vicks Vaporub - Common Cold - Inhalation

Vicks Vaporub Ointment is used as a decongestant, particularly for colds.
Formulated with camphor, turpentine essential oil, levomenthol, eucalyptus essential oil, and thymol, Vicks Vaporub Ointment quickly clears the airways and helps you breathe more easily. When gently massaged onto the chest or neck¹ or used for inhalation, it effectively relieves cold symptoms¹.

Eucalyptus is a tree native to Australia and Tasmania, now found in most countries with a warm temperate climate. It is highly effective in treating respiratory tract conditions, colds, coughs, and irritation of the throat or nasal mucous membranes because its leaves contain an essential oil with antiseptic and expectorant properties.

Description of Vicks Vaporub Cold Inhalation Jar 50G

VICKS Vaporub ointment is a medication used as a decongestant for common respiratory conditions (colds, coughs, and simple bronchitis). Please note that VICKS Vaporub ointment is an OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATION (available without a prescription).
Formulated with eucalyptus essential oil, camphor, levomenthol, turpentine essential oil, and thymol, the ointment clears congested airways when applied to the skin or inhaled.

Directions for Use and Dosage

FOR EXTERNAL USE ONLY.
TO OPEN THE SAFETY CAP, PRESS AND TURN at the same time, following the design engraved on the cap.

• For topical application: This medication is intended for adults and children over 6 years of age.
• Apply one teaspoonful once or twice a day to the chest or neck, preferably after bathing.
• Never exceed 2 applications per day.
• Wash your hands thoroughly after application.

Directions for topical use of Vicks Vaporub 50G ointment

• Fill the teaspoon to the brim with ointment.
• Turn the spoon back toward the inside of the jar and remove any excess ointment if necessary by scraping the teaspoon along the edge of the jar to get the correct dose.
• Apply with your fingers.
• Wash the spoon thoroughly after use.
• Wash your hands thoroughly after use.
• Keep your clothing loose around the application site to allow the product to spread properly.
• Never apply a bandage or dressing to the application site. Never cover the application site with warm clothing or any other source of heat.

For inhalation via vaporization of Vicks Vaporub 50G: This medication is intended for adults and children over 12 years of age.
1 to 3 times a day, melt 1 to 2 teaspoons of the product in a bowl of hot water (caution: do not use boiling water) and inhale the vapors through your nose and mouth.

 

If you have a cough, it may be helpful to use a cough syrup suitable for either dry or productive coughs.

Instructions for vaporization (inhalation with an inhaler) of Vicks Vaporub 50G

• Pour very hot water (be careful not to use boiling water) into a bowl or an inhaler.
• Fill a teaspoon to the brim with ointment, then invert it into the jar and remove any excess if necessary.
• Stir the ointment into the hot water (caution: do not use boiling water) to melt it.
• Wash the spoon thoroughly after use.

NEVER HEAT THE PREPARATION OR REHEAT IT, EVEN IN A MICROWAVE OVEN, DUE TO THE RISK OF SPLASHING.
NEVER USE BOILING WATER WHEN PREPARING THIS MIXTURE DUE TO THE RISK OF SPLASH BURNS.
Inhale the vapors for 10 to 15 minutes.
The duration of inhalation is limited to 3 days.

Description of Adverse Effects with Vicks Vaporub 50G

Like all medicines, Vicks Vaporub ointment may cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them.

• Local irritation and allergic reactions may occur. If you experience an allergic skin reaction or if the sensation of warmth becomes too intense, discontinue use. If too much is applied, an intense burning sensation may be felt.
• Due to the presence of terpene derivatives (camphor, menthol, thymol, eucalyptus) and in cases of use exceeding the recommended doses or failure to follow the instructions for use, agitation and confusion may occur in the elderly, or there may be a risk of seizures in children.

This ointment contains terpenes , with an antiseptic aim of the respiratory tract. Applied to the skin, they have a decongestant revulsive effect.
It is used to facilitate breathing during respiratory affections, with or without coughing.

CONTRAINDICATIONS ^(summary)

This medication should not be used in the following cases:

• in application to an injured skin (wound, eczema ),
  
• children with a history of seizures ,

WARNING ^(Contents)

This ointment contains volatile flammable substances: after application, avoid placing yourself near a flame or incandescent object (cigarette).
Drugs containing terpenes (camphor, levomenthol) can, in very rare cases, cause serious accidents in young children ( seizures , consciousness, respiratory arrest). They are therefore contraindicated in children under 6 years of age.
The risk of accidents due to terpenes is increased:

• during repeated or extended applications (do not apply at the same time to the back and chest),
  
• when the skin is damaged (burn, wound, eczema ...).
  

If there is no improvement after 3 days, consult a doctor if you develop a fever.

PREGNANCY AND BREAST-FEEDING ^(summary)

Pregnancy :
The effect of this medication during pregnancy is not well known. The assessment of the possible risk associated with its use is individual: ask your pharmacist or doctor for advice.

Breastfeeding:
Terpenes can give a particular taste to milk. Their absorption by the infant is undesirable: avoid using this medication during breastfeeding.
In all cases, never apply on breasts in breastfeeding women.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE AND DOSAGE ^(summary)

The ointment can be used either on the chest or neck or inhaled after dissolving in a bowl of warm water.

Usual dosage:

In dermal application:

• Adult and child over 6 years: apply 1 teaspoon of ointment, 1 or 2 times a day.
  

Inhalation:

• Adult and child over 12 years: 1 or 2 teaspoons of ointment in a bowl of warm water, 1 to 3 times a day.
