Which anti-lice shampoos should you choose to eliminate lice and nits?

Some newer anti-lice shampoos now feature gentle formulas inspired by natural hair care products, minimizing irritation to the scalp.
This allows for effective lice treatment while preserving the hair’s natural balance—which is particularly important for children or with repeated use. Several lice treatment products are available:

Traditional anti-lice treatments

Treating head lice is every parent’s worst nightmare, especially when these tiny parasites become resistant to various anti-lice shampoos. In fact, for an anti-lice treatment to be fully effective, it must be able to kill both lice and nits.

WARNING: Treatment is mandatory—there is no such thing as spontaneous recovery! The longer you wait before applying an appropriate treatment, the longer and more complicated it will be to eradicate all the parasites.

There are two categories of anti-lice treatments:

Insecticidal or neurotoxic products

Neurotoxins are irritating and can lead to resistance, but they work very well on nits. They usually come in the form of a spray to be applied to dry hair. Treatment must be performed in a well-ventilated area away from any open flames, taking care to protect the face—especially the eyes, nose, and mouth. Rinse thoroughly to prevent recontamination. Precautions: Most of these products are contraindicated for children under 2 or 3 years of age and for pregnant women; they are also contraindicated in cases of asthma or respiratory problems. Among the active ingredients in these products are: pyrethrum and synthetic pyrethroids. For all these reasons—but especially because of the resistance these products have caused—they are virtually no longer sold.

Asphyxiants (insecticide-free)

Asphyxiants are insecticide-free lice shampoos that work mechanically by blocking the breathing holes of adult lice and nits, causing them to die from suffocation. They are generally gentler on the scalp, non-toxic to the patient, and environmentally friendly. So far, these new products have not caused resistance in lice and do not irritate the scalp. They can be used on children as young as 6 months. The lotions are applied section by section to dry hair, and the application time varies by product, ranging from 10 minutes to 12 hours. Simply rinse the hair with a mild shampoo and then comb through it with a fine-toothed comb to remove the dead lice. It is recommended to repeat the treatment the next day or a few days later. These products generally contain silicone compounds (dimethicone, cyclomethicone).

Which anti-lice products are recommended for back-to-school season?

Find our best products in our online organic pharmacy to treat your hair with anti-lice shampoo.

If your child comes home from school with lice, don’t resort to ineffective treatments like vinegar water or electronic lice combs. It’s important to know that head lice can withstand prolonged immersion in water, which is why simply washing the hair—even thoroughly—is ineffective.

As a reminder, apply the lotion to dry hair; leave it on for 30 minutes (15 minutes for children under 2 years of age).

Then rinse the hair and comb it out using a lice comb.
