Gallstones and alcohol abuse are the two most common causes of acute pancreatitis. Imaging tests then determine the extent of the damage: an abdominal ultrasound detects gallstones, while CT and MRI scans visualize the pancreatic parenchyma and look for potential complications such as pseudocysts or necrosis.
The acute form requires hospitalization with digestive rest, intravenous hydration, and appropriate pain management. When gallstones are the cause, a cholecystectomy is scheduled to prevent recurrence. The chronic form is managed with pancreaticenzyme supplements to compensate for exocrine insufficiency, medical pain management, and bypass or resection surgery when the ducts are obstructed or the pain is resistant to conservative treatments.
Limiting or stopping alcohol consumption is the most decisive preventive measure. Quitting smoking significantly slows the progression of the chronic form. Adopting a diet that aids digestion—low in saturated fat and high in fiber—reduces the risk of gallstones and limits inflammatory episodes. Strict management of underlying metabolic conditions—such as dyslipidemia and obesity—also helps prevent recurrences.
Chronic pancreatitis carries a risk of several serious complications. Exocrine insufficiency causes malabsorption of fats, proteins, and fat-soluble vitamins, leading to malnutrition and weight loss. The progressive destruction of beta cells leads to type 3c diabetes, which is distinct from type 2 diabetes and requires specific management. The risk of pancreatic cancer is also significantly increased, which justifies regular ultrasound and laboratory monitoring.
A low-fat diet reduces enzymatic stimulation and relieves the pancreas on a daily basis. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provide the necessary fiber and micronutrients without overburdening the organ. Good nutrition and adequate hydration remain essential at every meal. In severe cases with confirmed exocrine insufficiency, pancreatic enzyme supplements are essential to ensure proper nutrient absorption.
Chronic pain can limit professional, athletic, and social activities. Strict dietary restrictions make meals with family or friends more complicated.
