Emotionality refers to a person’s tendency to react intensely and visibly to emotional stimuli—joy, sadness, anger, and fear—expressed with greater intensity than average. While emotionality is partly a stable personality trait, its intensity fluctuates significantly depending on one’s current physiological state: fatigue, chronic stress, hormonal fluctuations (menstrual cycle, perimenopause, postpartum), and nutritional deficiencies temporarily amplify emotional reactivity. Neurologically, emotionality is linked to the sensitivity of the amygdala (the brain’s rapid emotion processing center), coupled with more or less effective regulation by the prefrontal cortex. When this prefrontal regulation is weakened by stress or fatigue, emotional reactions become more intense and harder to control—this is reactive hyperemotionality, which is distinct from stable personality-based emotionality.
