When should you use this face cream for sensitive skin?

Weleda Sensitive Hydrating & Soothing Cream is a rich facial treatment formulated with two plant-based oils. Sweet almond oil, cold-pressed from the almonds of Prunus amygdalus dulcis, is the second ingredient in the formula after water; it is complemented by plum kernel oil, which is also rich in unsaturated fatty acids. Glycerin helps retain moisture in the skin’s outer layers, while hydrolyzed beeswax gives the texture its melt-in-the-skin feel. Free of fragrance and essential oils, the cream is specially formulated for sensitive or reactive skin—skin that reacts to even the slightest added scent.

The application process is simple. The cream soothes and moisturizes sensitive, dry-prone skin by forming a supple, oily film that limits water evaporation and leaves the skin feeling more comfortable. After application, the skin is visibly softer, and redness and tightness are reduced—the two symptoms that people with reactive skin spontaneously describe when talking about their faces at the end of the day.

The texture is rich without being occlusive, making it suitable for year-round use. By stabilizing the hydrolipidic film, it reduces feelings of discomfort and protects against external aggressors: cold, wind, and air dried out by heating or air conditioning. It thus works on three fronts—soothing, repairing, and protecting—and its skin tolerance has been tested under dermatological supervision.

The cream is suitable for use as both a day and night treatment on the face, neck, and décolletage, and can be worn under makeup once it has been absorbed. It is ideal for sensitive or reactive skin with a tendency toward dryness, as well as for skin prone to atopic conditions where discomfort is primarily due to dryness. If you’re unsure which texture to choose, our selection of products for sensitive and fragile skin includes lightweight, balm-like, and fragrance-free options.

A product for reactive skin works best on skin that has been cleansed without harsh surfactants: a makeup remover that strips the skin away negates much of the benefit of the cream applied afterward. For this, we recommend Weleda Almond Gentle Cleansing Milk, a fragrance-free cleanser from the same line that removes impurities and makeup residue without foaming detergents, leaving the skin ready to absorb the cream.

How should you apply this soothing facial treatment morning and night?

Precautions

  • For external use only on the face, neck, and décolleté. Avoid the immediate eye area and mucous membranes; rinse thoroughly with clean water if product comes into contact with these areas.
  • Do not use if you have a known allergy to almonds or tree nuts. Sweet almond oil is the second ingredient in the formula, and an unrefined vegetable oil retains some of the proteins from the seed from which it is derived.
  • For children with eczema or broken skin, consult a doctor or pharmacist before applying a product containing nut oil. Repeated application of a peanut oil-based product to an infant’s inflamed skin has been associated with an increased risk of subsequent food allergies, and the same mechanism of absorption through an impaired skin barrier is being discussed for other seed oils.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to beeswax or bee products: the formula contains hydrolyzed beeswax.
  • The formula contains alcohol, listed third in the ingredients list. It may sting on cracked, scraped, or inflamed skin.
  • Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, sunburn, or after a recent dermatological procedure without the practitioner’s approval.
  • If you have very sensitive skin, test the product on a small area of the inner elbow 48 hours before applying it to your face for the first time. Discontinue use if redness, persistent stinging, or a burning sensation occurs.
  • A spreading eczema flare-up, a weeping, crusted, or painful patch, or a lesion that itches so badly it prevents sleep requires a medical consultation. A moisturizer is intended for dry skin; it does not replace a prescribed treatment and should not delay the start of such treatment.
  • This product is intended for adults and adolescents. For young children, seek pharmaceutical or medical advice before use.
  • Close the tube tightly after each use; store away from heat and light; keep out of reach of children.

Our expert advice on Weleda Sensitive Cream

The key factor to consider before purchasing isn’t the texture—it’s the ingredient list. Sweet almond oil is the second ingredient in this cream, and cold-pressed oil is not refined: it retains a fraction of the seed’s proteins. For someone allergic to almonds or tree nuts, this alone is reason enough to avoid the product. For a child experiencing a skin flare-up, the same caution applies, though for a different reason: a damaged skin barrier allows proteins to pass through that healthy skin would block, and it is in this environment that sensitization occurs. At the counter, we always ask about nut allergies before recommending an almond oil-based product, and we suggest an alternative plant-based oil if there’s even the slightest doubt. The presence of alcohol as the third ingredient is also worth noting: the cream is well tolerated on dry, intact skin, but it stings on chapped or cracked skin.

Otherwise, the approach is the same as for any reactive skin care: use few products, always the same ones, and apply them regularly. Two applications a day are better than one thick layer at night, and you should wait two to three weeks before assessing any improvement in comfort—that’s how long it takes for the stratum corneum to reorganize. Avoid layering the cream with an exfoliating acid or a retinoid on the same night: on skin that’s already reactive, the resulting irritation negates the intended benefit. And if redness sets in, is concentrated in the center of the face, or is accompanied by visible blood vessels or small pimples, the issue is no longer one of moisturizing: it requires a dermatologist’s evaluation.

FAQ

Can I use Weleda Sensitive Hydrating & Soothing Cream if I’m allergic to tree nuts?

No. The cream lists sweet almond oil as the second ingredient, and almonds are nuts. Anyone allergic to almonds—or to another nut with cross-reactivity—should avoid this product and ask their pharmacist for a soothing product that does not contain nut oil.

Can I apply Weleda Sensitive Hydrating & Soothing Cream to skin prone to atopic conditions?

This cream is suitable for atopic-prone skin, on dry, intact skin, between flare-ups. On a flaring, weeping, or cracked patch, the application process changes: the alcohol in the formula may sting, and the almond oil is then applied to a compromised skin barrier. It’s best to consult a doctor before using it on a child whose skin is experiencing a flare-up.

Can I replace my Absolute Comfort Almond Cream with Weleda Sensitive Hydra-Soothing Cream?

Yes, it is the same product under a new name. The Almond line has been renamed Sensitive, and the Absolute Comfort Cream is now called Hydra-Soothing Cream: the barcode remains the same, as does the ingredient list.

Will I notice a scent when applying Weleda Sensitive Hydrating & Soothing Cream?

No fragrance has been added to this cream: its ingredient list contains no “Parfum,” “Fragrance,” or essential oils. The slight almond scent you notice upon application comes from the sweet almond oil itself, which is one of the two emollients in the formula.
